Reeve J. Ziegler, Councillors W. Houston and C. Joubert, Town Clerk D. Fulton, and J. Wilcox were pre- sent. Council received an update on- fundraising for the Downhill Ski Club from Garry Richards and Tom Trapp. They were pleased by the turnout at the fish derby and the dance on July 21. More than 300 people have now become members in the club, even though the ski hill is not yet available. The Ski Club has asked Council for-help in obtaining a long-term lease for the ski hill land from Kimberly-Clark. Presently, Kimberly-Clark has agreed to one-year leases, yet the out," said Ziegler. Council agreed to approach Kimberly- Clark. Rita, Chris and Linda McBride expressed their concerns about parking in their driveway on Kenogami. With the new side- walks installed, their driveway will be shorter, and there will not be enough room to park their two vehicles. When they do park, they will block off part of the sidewalk. A request was made that park- ing be permitted on Kenogami. Council had already discussed changing the existing by-law, and a motion to amend the by-law was carried. Specific parking areas will be designated along the south side of Kenogami Avenue, if the majority of residents in the area affected approve. The award, given by the Government of Canada, is pre- sented to a youth who has made a exceptional contribution to the youth of Canada and to the ideals of Canadian citizenship. Councillors Mike King and Bill Houston presented Jeff with a plaque at the Canada Day open- ing ceremonies in Terrace Bay. "Jeff's good with kids and always volunteers for things around the community," said Mike King. Jeff Mikus, son of Jim and Neldine, is a well-known 15 year- old around Terrace Bay. Jeff's time is almost complete- ly taken up by working, volun- teering, school clubs, and even running his own business. Volunteering for community projects is something Jeff always seems to find time for. He taught kids' crafts last winter and took an active part helping out in the Canada Day activities this year. He also volunteered his help to the Horticultural Society and was on hand to volunteer his help dur- ing Education Week at the schools. At the time he received the award, Jeff was working four summer jobs. He was employed at A & W, the Aguasabon Golf Course, the Aguasabon Trailer Park, and at the Terrace Bay Recreation Centre. Jeff has recently started run- ning his own business. He employs 11 agents for Dickie Dee. You've probably seen the ice cream carts around Terrace Bay. At Lake Superior High School, Jeff always finds time for clubs and extracurricular activi- ties. During the 1989-90 school year he belonged to the Stereo Club, Stratford Club, and is a member of student council. Jeff was the lead in the school musical "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown". The play was a great success. Jeff has attended two leader- ship conferences which may explain his initiating and involve- ment in so many activities. Chief Don Kidder of the Terrace Bay Police Force encouraged Jeff to apply for a Crime Prevention Course. "He's the type of youth whose active in social matters inter- related with police matters in regards to the safety of children 'and the protection of property," Chief Kidder said, "He's a crime prevention type person and I'll back him on his application."
