SPagé 6 News; Thesday{July 24°1990....-.---+.-.- oe 6 Se ee} ie ee Sh a 8 ee ee ee ee All the world's a circus- the Jumbotron screen or they weren't asking the Lord for just a little dying quayle behind the sec- ond base bag? You can see the problem. It puts God in the unenviable posi- tion of making Dave Stewart a perfect pitcher at the expense of cutting back George Bell's R.B.I. total, thus costing him a million dollar bonus which he was going to donate to the starving and Northern Insights- cont'd from 5 According to Epp, the age dif- ferences in the poll indicate that the younger generation "is more prepared to recognize that Canada just isn't the kind of country that your grandfather thought it was." Unfortunately, that comment begs the question about what kind of country we were, and, more importantly, what we're to become. If you look at the poll results superficially, it seems we Heartlanders are entering this post-Meech era deeply divided over whether we still want to have a reputation as Canadians as tolerant, multi-racial, and mullti- lingual, or whether we want to live behind impenetrable ethnic and language barriers. But if you read the poll's fine print, perhaps there's room for some optimism. In the COLT poll, a clear majority - 54% to 37% - want the City bureaucracy to deal with people Letter to Editor cont'd from page 4 responsible pet owners who live in rental accommodation, and they should not be denied pet ownership just because they do no not own that accommodation. Statistics prove that a large num- ber of animals have been handed over to animal shelters as a direct result of a threat of eviction. The Ontario Humane Society, and many other organizations have been campaigning for the removal of the no-pet clause in standard leases, a campaign which gained tremendous public support. The amendments are an excel- lent example of the democratic process in action, of which we can all be proud. Bryan F, Denham, Executive Director underprivileged sales clerks at Giorgio Armani's in Hazelton Lanes. You see when Born-Agains ask for the hand of God to hang a beating on other Born-Agains, it divides the flock so to speak, thus requiring the services of Born- Again Mike, the black-patched Australian sheepdog from Down and Out in Beverly Hills to round everybody back up again. And in their own language. That flies in the face of those in the majori- ty on council who objected to having to pay for city services to be in a language other than English. In practical terms, it should not mean having to trans- late all the by-laws and minute books into French, Italian, Greek, and Ojibway, Instead, it would mean having to supply inter- preters so by-law enforcement officers or social workers can talk to some unilingual Chinese or Ukrainian person - or at least get important letters to individuals translated. This Heartlander hopes we end up opting for tolerance and duali- ty, instead of isolation and big- otry. Whether this country includes Quebec or not, the rest of us will still have to live together. We have a responsibili- ty to future generations, and the Dear Editor, On February 7, 1988 my daughter Liz left an abusive mar- riage to seek shelter from her hus- band. On March 15, 1988 her husband shot her twice through the head. In the year and a half follow- ing her murder, I found that I would be allowed to give a Victim Impact Statement to the court before sentencing. At the time I chose not to do this on advice from the Crown Attorney. I have since regretted that deci- sion. To the people out there who are victims of crime, I advise that you complete a Victim impact Statement. The police will help you in this matter as will the Crown Attorney's Office. For those of you who, like me, choose not too, you can still send a Victim Impact Statement to the Parole Board. re Happy Birthday Aunettie Hap -py Bir-thday -to- you, x te, d hap-py -bir-thday -to -you, f happy _-- -de-ar A-n-net- _haw-rybirthday -t0 -to ae Love, B. M. C. G. D. a we all know that dogs have no place i in baseball unless it's catch- ing frisbees in the outfield during the seventh inning stretch and by God are the good! By invoking the name of Our Father Who Art, Born-Agains have raised the age-old question that has puzzled Philistines and Anthroprimoidians for centuries - "Is God A Baseball Fan?" Well this is not for me to con- firm or deny. After bleeding Blue rest of the world, to prove that this country can function without the civil wars, racial intolerance, religious bigotry or linguistic iso- lationism found in many other parts of the globe. As an anglophone, I am not threatened by someone who speaks a different language. Similarly, I hope they are not threatened by my linguistic her- itage. Instead, I hope they share my enthusiasm for the diversity of humanity. From where I sit, that seems to be as good a place as any to start down the post- Meech road, here in the Heartland. If we all accept that basic starting point, presumably the council majority can reconsid- er their "English-Only" position, and vote differently next time. The sooner they do, the sooner the scars of division in the Heartland will heal. This is very important as the parole then has a chance to see your side of the story. If you do this in court, the Parole Board will receive the statement along with the court files, so either way, they hear your side of things, not just the criminal's side. I also want to ask people to contact their government regard- ing concerns of death due to fam- ily violence. My daughter sought refuge in a shelter and she was later murdered by her husband. Many wives and mothers have met the same fate as Liz did. They have sought shelter from violence to face death at the hands of their mates. Many more women are unable to access shelters and also die at the hands of their partners and this must stop. Too many children who have seen or felt abuse are left home- less and frightened and if we, the citizens of this country do not take a stand, the number of mur- dered women in this land will only increase as Public Opinion hides behind closed doors. Alice Park Kenora, Ontario Jay blood for 13 years and watch- . ing them self-destruct in post-sea- son play, I can say with some cer- tainty that God does have a ~ wicked sense of humour. Witness George' Bell's untime- ly hitting slumps, the grounder that escaped through Manny Lee's knees or even all those carbuncles on Job. I believe He would agree with me when I say I want God's name taken out of sports. God is above favoritism and you can even look it up - no Latin player with the first name of Jesus (pronounced HEY! ZEUS) of which there have been three in both the American and National Leagues, has ever hit over 280 lifetime averages. No, baseball has not been berry, berry good to guys who take God's name. If God where to take the odd shot at divine intervention, I don't think it should be in sports. In fact it should be to fix that broken Hubbell Space Telescope. I mean cont'd from page 5 it's out there in the heavens som where, it's not as if he has make a special trip or anything. There is a place for settli religious differences on a dai competitive basis and it's not the ball diamond or in a lock room. It's in the Mideast. Now if Born-Agains w please, please leave God out sports and not encourage z Robertson to ever again run | president, than I'm willing to di my campaign to have beer a wine sold in churches.
