Page 7, News, Tuesday, May 22, 1990 Letter- How much do they think we can take? Dear Editor, For something that started out as merely "A Ware Measures Act", the government surely has carried this over to its fullest extent. How much further do they expect taxing the hard work- ing people of this country will go? How much do they figure we can take? Honestly, speaking for myself as a voting member, I think they've done enough. Income Tax forms are becoming increas- ingly difficult, you almost have to be half a genius to figure it out. It's bad enough when nipping 1/4 of your paycheck, but they also add taxes everywhere else, gro- ceries, clothing, liquor and beer. Cigarettes!! Cigarettes, now that's a topic, admittantly, it is bad for your health, but I won't tell my grandmother, she'll be 100 Lyme D Lyme Disease is a newly described illness caused by the bite of an infected tick. The dis- ease often begins with a charac- teristic rash which can later infect the joints, nervous system, and /or heart. Ticks are also known to infect wild and domestic animals. Early treatment with antibiotics will prevent later manifestations. The tick is very small, no larg- er than the size of a period on a printed page. They cling to vege- tation and are most numerous in bushy wooded grassy areas. Lyme Disease has only been reported in Ontario since November of 1988. Accurate Statistics of its prevalence in this province are difficult to obtain. Studies are under way in several provinces to determine if Lyme Disease is widespread in this country. Bordering States, Minnesota and Wisconsin, do consider Lyme Disease an impor- in a couple of years. Not only do they increase the tax on them, but they, our ever so smart govern- ment, is telling us where to smoke them, next thing you know they'll be telling us how to smoke them! They are so good about passing laws why don't they just outlaw the production of them. I thought laws were brought about by a majority vote. I have as yet to see where the people get a vote. Sure they hold polls or form committees to hear what people have to say, but who's lis- tening, not our cabinet members. I mean, it seems childish, when watching them, sitting behind their desks and banging the tops, when they do or don't approve. Our schooling system teaches the children not to bang desks but, ah well, life goes on. I'm straying from the subject isease tant health risk. If you are planning to travel to heavily wooded grassy areas this year: -wear light colored long pants and long sleeved shirts with snug fitting collars and sleeves. -wear sturdy shoes with socks tucked in around the trouser legs. -use insect repellents with either 30% DEET or 0.5% perme- thrin. -brush off clothing and pets before entering house. -inspect your clothes and body ~ daily for ticks. -since ticks require 1-3 days of engorgement to transmit the organism after the initial bite, ticks should be removed gently upon discovery with tweezers. Now I'm just your average, hard- working Canadian citizen, strug- gling to make a living, but, it appears to me that the rich get richer, the poor get poorer, and us poor slobs get taxed even more. Not only do they claim tax off our paychecks and items we buy, they also turn around and tell us at the end of our year that we have to pay more. Sounds like a fair deal to me? How about you? When do us little guys get our tax breaks? Now, I'm no genius, not saying I'm a dolt either, but who's going to figure out what we charge for services, labor, etc. I guess I'll have to become a walk- ing calculator or a computer whiz kid to figure out what I'm sup- posed to do. I have enough prob- lems just compiling all our receipts into some sort of order, so it makes sense. Where will we be when the GST comes in? The way I see it the big corporations will love the tax. The more they rake in, the less they pay out. while we pay more and take home less. I think we should fire our gov- ernment and start with a new one. People who know what it's like to have both members of the family working, while trying to to raise a family. I'm sure someone with any common sense at all can see where this GST is heading to. Strong views maybe, but our gov- ernment doesn't listen any way! It's time for the people to wake 'up and smell the roses! Why do we have to sit back and take what our government dishes out? If we don't start to speaking up soon, where will we end up? I'm terri- fied to think about it. I think everyone should put pen to paper and make themselves heard. Of course, they didn't listen about the railroad either, right? Okay, let's not speak up! Let's sit back and do nothing! Let's let our government make our Canada, all French! French our official language. Doesn't that tickle your fancy. I know it makes my day. I've only spoken in English since I was one. I like the comment I read in the paper, from Len Nelson. "If big business gets its way the GST, Canada will be a society more than ever for the rich and privileged. he It's time we got off our duffs and did something before its too late. Before staying home and doing nothing is easier than try- ing to go to work, struggling to make ends meet. Who ever said the best things in life are free, must not have lived in this day and age. Everything costs money and on top of that they tax it as well. Great system we have here! All I have to say at the end of all this, is I'm still frustrated and concerned over our dilemma. Surely its got to get better it can't get much worse. Down with GST. We no longer have "freedom of Choice", our government rules our country. Where did the voice of the people go?
