Page 13, News, Tuesday, April 24, 1990 Pet Talk Teaching your dog the command "heel" By Alice Scott Now that your dog knows the commands- Sit Stay, Down, and Come, you can begin the 'heeling' exercise. Nothing is more embarrassing than having your dog take you for a walk instead of you taking him for a walk. Remember to always work your dog on your left side. Start with a sit, stay command. Use your left leg for a command and the voice command "heel" preceded by the dog's-name. ex. "Nova, heel" Put your left hand on the head as if you were shaking hands. Move briskly, talk to the dog all the time you are practising, and encourage him to keep up with you or stay back with you. With the medium and large dogs, his shoulder should be in line with your leg. With smaller dogs, the head is in line with your leg. Do not pull on the lead or have any pressure on the head. The dog should always be on a loose lead. The corrections should be a quick snap, jerk, or pop on the lead, then immediately loose the lead again. If the dog keeps forg- ing, your snap is not effective enough. Remember after each correc- tion you must praise your dog. Winnie' its fluffy state; a natural protec- tion for mice,-moles, and other small animals. When the snow is packed hard, it ceases to be an insulator and becomes a barrier for the animals under the snow. The healthful, exciting sport of snowmobiling can be enjoyed and nature's balance can remained undisturbed if we keep to desig- nated areas. Stay out of wooded The praise must be genuine and timed to perfection. A dog will only work for praise or treats so it is up to you as the trainer to provide the reward. When you halt the dog he areas; park your machine and walk into the solitary places. You may see cottontail scampering away or hear a lilting songbird. We really don't know how badly wildlife need the dead silence of winter. Most animals simply cannot accommodate noise in the mating season, partic- ularly those with high metabolic rates. The earsplitting noise of a should be in the sit position. Whenever you are ready to halt, give your dog time to slow down, and always stop on the right foot and bring up on the right foot. This way your pet will learn to watch your movements, snowmobile must terrify a crea- ture that is used to the quiet win- ter. Wildlife is most important to our preservation and as time pass- es, and our numbers increase, we need more wilderness areas with its wildlife creatures. Please keep snowmobiling to designated areas and allow nature's small creatures to live in peace. and you will have his undivided attention. Attending obedience classes is the best way for you and your pet to learn the commands.
