The angry protest led by local union President Don Lavigne and Gary Talarico, the International Rep for UPIU, made very clear to CPU members Rene Linquist and Bob Lavalley, that they were not wanted in Terrace Bay. "Fight for my union Damn right would" Picket signs stating: "CPU Get Out of Town", "We Support UPIU", and "Fight for my union- damn right I would!" showed exactly how the Kimberly Clark mill workers felt. "Terrace Bay is a nice clean town and now that we know what garbage looks like...we want it out! We're not slimebuckets like you." A few quotes by thes- pokesmen of the angry mob showed that the locals are happy existing the way they ate with UPIU and don't want the commu- nity divided in half by CPU. The UPIU, the local union since 1947, do not want the mill taken over by CPU which will surely cause devastating effects to the town of Terrace Bay. 'The CPU was organized in 1974 as the result of a desire for a national union in the industry. Prior to 1974, all CPU members were UPIU members. Some locals voted to remain with the International among these includ- ing Terrace Bay, Marathon, Kenora, Pine Falls, Georgetown, Fort Frances, Thunder Bay and Thorold. Some of these locals have since broken away and joined the CPU. "CPU are dirty players" Don Lavigne, president of the local 665, makes clear why he and his executive board are so strongly opposed to the CPU way of operating. The CPU have lost all credibility in the Canadian labor movement, the communities they operate in, and the compa- nies they deal with. "The CPU are dirty players," explains Don Lavigne, "Terrace Bay has never been on strike or lock out since 1947, CPU seems to cause a strike every time they take over another union and CPU is sure to shut down Terrace Bay." Terrace Bay cannot afford to leave people out of work. As the situation stands now, The 550 members of the local 665, have a unique situation whereby "They" are the voice that direct what will be the terms and working divi- sions and not some disinterested them out third party like CPU. The UPIU want to make their own decisions, not be told what to do by some guy Sitting in an office in Montreal. Under UPIU leadership, Local 665 members are the only party that decide if strike action is nec- essary. This has worked from 1947 to present as demonstrated by an unbroken record of no strikes, no lock-outs, and few labor disputes. The contract of the UPIU still leads the paper industry on the majority of benefits and changes so why change? If Terrace Bay switches unions, their collective agreement ceases to exist. A vote will be held if 35% of the UPIU mem- bers signs and give their $1.00.
