TERRACE BAY/SCHREIBER NEWS Wednesday, February 28, 1990 Page 8 New car colours coming (NC)--As we enter a new decade, what can we expect to see in the colours of cars in the 1990s? While we'll still see many of the traditional car colours, we also will see a range of colours that are lighter, brighter and cleaner, according to General Motors' Design Colour and Material Studio. Recent studies of trends point to- ward a bright future for "quasar blue," Tahitian teal," "radiant red" and "sea- foam green." The move to brighter col- ours is a worldwide trend. Customers are asking for them, and General Mo- tors now has the technological capabili- ties to produce them. Bright colours and cars aren't anew mix. The lead chromate pigments used in the mid-1970s allowed for brilliant yellows, blues and oranges. But when government began talking about pro- hibiting the use of lead in paint, GM took the initiative and removed the substance from all GM paint colours in 1977. However, at that time there were no suitable substitutes. Auto Facts Today there are now new paint tech- nologies such as base-coat/clear-coat and tri-coat capabilities, plus new pig- ments. And designers are supplement- ing the sober greys and navies with new loud, playful colours that still pass stringent GM tests, but also give cus- tomers a bright rainbow of choices. Anew waterborne paint process is in use at General Motors of Canada's truck plant in Oshawa and car assembly plant in Ste. Therese, Quebec. These paint shops are among the few in the world that use a water-base paint in- stead of traditional oil-based paint, which virtually eliminates contami- nants released into the atmosphere and increase quality of the final paint finish.
