The results of this research project will determine what types of support caregivers feel would be most useful to them and what degree of funding should be made available in the future to help caregivers address their needs. Presently, little information is available on the numbers of care- givers out there, or the specific needs they face. Your input can make a big difference. Please contact one of the numbers listed if you are presently a carcgiver or have been in the past. and School of Continuing Studies; the Federation of Ontario Naturalists; the Ontario Ps ofessional Foresters Axssociation and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. "I will ask ininistry staff to rcview the discussions on old growth and consider the implica- tions of the discussions for man- aging our forests," Natural Resources Minister Lyn McLeod said. At present, there is not a uni- versally accepted definition with- in the scientific community of what constitutes an old growth forest in Ontario. The symposium brought together renowned scien- tists who discussed old growth forest ecosystems, energy flow and nutrient balance in forests, biodiversity, Ontario's forest resources and successful develop- ment in forests. "The results of this forum will provide a valuable addition to our bank of information," said Mrs. McLeod. "We recognize the importance of managing old forests for future generations and we are listening to concerns and ideas about how that can be accomplished." The ministry recognizes the need to strike the best balance between protecting old growth of all species and ensuring timber resources to meet the need for forest products. : "Our decisions on forest man- agement must increasingly bal- ance the needs of many seeming- ly conflicting interests," Mrs. McLeod said. "Our efforts in Temagami demonstrate our com- mitment to working towards that balance." In preparation for last week- end's symposium, the Ministry of Natural Resources commissioned an earth and life science study in the Temagami area. It also con- ducted studies of its own in the area. Additionally, the ministry has released a survey which details the location ef old red and white pine stands in the province and has conducted research on natural red and white pine zones in Algonquin Park.
