Wednesday, January 10, 1990 TERRACE BAY/SCHREIBER NEWS Page 5 ~ fetter to tte etter ~ Jan. 14 last chance to voice protest over VIA Rail cuts Dear Editor: On Sunday, January 14, the last VIA passenger train will pass through Schreiber. The Schreiber Township Council has expended all its efforts to persuade Mr. Bouchard and Mr. Mulroney to keep rail passenger service along the North Shore and across Canada. Petitions, and supporting let- ters have been sent to Mr. Bouchard and Mr. Mulroney in Ottawa, and the Township of Schreiber, along with other coun- cils, including the city of Thunder Bay sent delegates to meet with Mr. Bouchard in Ottawa. It appears at this time, that nothing we have tried will change their minds. 'We need you, the people to join us in protesting vehemently, the loss of our passenger service. On Sunday morning, January 14, we ask you all to join us at the railway station in Schreiber. Bring your family, friends and neighbors. Make up signs, posters, or banners showing your displea- sure. This will be our last chance to protest the tragic loss of a seg- ment of our own Canadian cul- ture and heritage. The government and VIA Rail should be improving the passen- ger rail service in this area, not abandoning it. On Sunday, January 14, 1990, show your support and be there. Yours truly, Schreiber Township Council (N.B. The train, if running on time, arrives in Schreiber at 8:00 a.m. To find out if the train is running on time, call 824-2003.) Life's race well run By Shelley Long Stacey Whitncy, my niece I had written about before, gave up a well fought battle at 8:05 a.m. on December 26, 1989. She was 11. months old on this day. Infection caused her system to shut down. Stacey only lived a few months but she came to earth with a purpose in her heart. In reflecting I know her purpose was to restore our faith in humanity. She touched many hearts and received gifts from people who would have never known her warm smile or touch her tiny hands. The tears her family and friends are crying is because she has left us. However, her pain and suffering is completed. Her mes- sage from God was well received. For many who have donated to Stacey's fund, we thank you. And for those who have prayed for Stacey and felt our sorrow, we thank you also. My sister has informed me that the money that was donated will go into an organization in Sudbury that deals with helping parents whose children must trav- el for medical care. Thanks to everyone for the warmth that has becn shown to us. It's the greatest comfort at this time. Thank you, Shelley Long.
