Aguasabon Golf Club $3,000 closer to reaching goal By Dave Chmara Last week, the Terrace Bay Royal Canadian Legion Branch 223 gave the Aguasabon Golf Club an added boost when they made a donation $3,000. The money will go towards the cost of the new club house which has a projected cost of $280,000. Paul Malashewski, president of the Aguasabon Golf Club, said construction of the new facility began during the third week of September and last week the framing of the building was com- pleted. Malashewski said work will continue on the club house throughout the winter and added the facility will be open for the 1990 golfing season. Kamphof Construction from Thunder Bay did the framing of the club house and Cullmar Construction did the foundation work. The wood, doors and win- dows were purchased from North Shore Home Building. Quinard roughed in the plumbing and Joe Mussolino designed the building. All the contractors have charged a reduccd fee which are considered as _ donations Malashewski said. ' Once the building has heating, sometime in January, the club will draw upon its members for volunteer labor to do some of the work inside the club house such as electrical and drywall. Malashewski said so far dona- tions are coming in slowly. He attributed this to the time of the year and the fact that many peo- ple are not thinking about golf right now. So far, fundraising for the club house has reached about $20,000. Selling "bricks" is the main fundraising activity by which the club is trying to raise money for the new facility. At the end of the golf season, $5,000 worth of bricks had been purchased with another $3,000 to $4,000 pledged. Membership fees for the 1989 season were raised by $15 as well with this money slated for the construction project. The 1989 season saw 227 people join the golf club which is the most mem- bers the club has ever had. Malashewski said members range in age from school age children to senior citizens. In other fundraising efforts, he said letters have been sent to local businesses asking for donations. He said the response from the businesses has been slow so far and added the fundraising com- mittee will follow-up these letters by contacting the businesses con- cerncd. Although the new club house is coming along nicely, Malashewski said it didn't start that way. He said ,"the project has .been going on for a good three-years now." When. the golf club originally applied for a grant, they were turned down because the govern- ment said a study was needed. Once the study was complet- ed, the club again applied for a grant and this time it was approved. Once completed, the new club house will have a storage area, washrooms and the greens' keep- crs work area on the bottom Icvel. The top floor will house the lounge, restaurant and pro shop and will have a seating capacity of about 100 people. Anyone wishing to make a donation towards the cost of the new club house can call Carol Hansen at 825-3602. Photo by Dave Chmara Dozens search for missing hunter By Dave Chmara Over 40 people, tracking dogs and an OPP helicopter were involved in the search for a miss- ing hunter the weekend of Nov. 4 and 5. Schreiber resident - Lugie Carngi went missing while moose hunting Sat. Nov. 4 around 8:30 a.m. After shooting a moose, Carngi decided to track the ani- mal. His son, Frank, and another man waited until 10 p.m. Saturday night for Carngi to return. Later that night, they went out again around 3 a.m. Sunday ' morning using a quadrunner to search for Carngi in the area of Hydro power lines. Having no luck finding Carngi, he was reported missing to the Schreiber OPP at 12:15 p.m. Sunday. Police contacted a search and rescue team and began the initial search at 3 p.m. Sunday. : Schreiber OPP Sergeant Andy Templar said Carngi had, on pre- vious occasions, returned late from hunting, but .had never been' out overnight before and this raised some concern that Carngi may have been injured. The Thunder Bay canine unit was Called into the search but late Sunday the dog had overextended itself so. its handlers decided to build a shelter for the night. About a dozen OPP officers and 38 volunteer civilians took Sse part in the search, some of whom even took the day off work to look for Carngi.. Sunday night, searchers sounded a siren and shot off marine flares every half hour to indicate their position to Carngi. The OPP helicopter joined the search Monday at 10 a.m. and at 1:30 p.m. the same day Carngi was found in good condition 7 km from Schreiber, about 1/3 of the way up the west shore of Maude Lake and was flown out by helicopter. Templar thanked the volunteer searchers who helped and those -who were kind enough to lend the marine flare equipment. For all his effort, Carngi never did catch the moose. Belluz Realty Ltd.
