Wednesday, October 25, 1989 ' TERRACE BAY/SCHREIBER NEWS Page 3 ehind the scenes at McCausland By Dave Chmara The McCausland Hospital has a vital function in the areas health care. Beginning this week, and running every two weeks, the News will examine a different department of the hospital to give area residents a clearer understanding of how it oper- ates. Despite being. behind the scene, the McCausland Hospital Lab plays an important role in helping doctors diagnose patients. Few people get the chance to see the lab, except maybe when they have blood taken, and even then they only get to see the outer part of the department. Richard Lipowski, chief labo- ratory technologist, has been the department head for the past two years. Along with the help of Jean Fisher, Wendy Ylijoki, Mary Bedard and. Brenda Lennon, the lab performs a wide variety of tests which help doctors reach a diagnosis for their patients. The lab performs tests to look for everything from heart, liver, and kidney problems to various infections and diseascs. The catchment area for the hospital lab is for doctors' patients in the Pays Plat to Jackfish area and also for any people travelling through who may require tests. Lipowski noted the lab itsclf does not make the final diagnosis, but, provides doctors with infor- mation which the doctors then use, along with othcr tests and examinations, to make the diag- nosis. - All the work the lab performs is held in the strictest of confi- HOUSE FOR SALE MOVING, MUST SELL 1 1/2 storey, 3 bedroom, 2-3 pc. baths. Lipowski noted that's the doctors responsi- bility - and besides, it's illegal for the lab to give out this informa- tion, even to the patient con- cerned. The world of the lab is con- stantly changing with new tech- nology constantly improving the accuracy and speed of the testing. Because of this lab, technolo- gists must upgrade their skills and education. But, because of the distance to teaching centres, or for teachers to come here, and the related transportation costs, corre- spondence courses and telecon- ferencing are two alternatives to going away to learn. Just Iast week the lab technol- ogists took part in a teleconfer- encing !ccture. The McCausland Hospital lab is sent literature and a video in advance of the lecture date. They can then follow along by watching the video and printed matcrial while listening to the instructor over the phone lines. If thcy have any questions, they can ask the instructor at any time. Lipowski said the lab also runs a clinic in Schreiber to collect blood from seniors. "Many seniors have no way of getting here to the hospital so we offer this service and it helps," said Lipowski.
