Wednesday, August 23, 1989 TERRACE BAY/SCHREIBER NEWS Page 3 Equipment problems believed to be cause of drowning in Rossport By Dave Chmara Schreiber OPP speculate equipment malfunction was responsible for the death of a Brampton man Saturday, August 12. Reginald Barrett, 53 years of age from Brampton, Ontario, was discovered missing after his div- ing partners, Fred Upton of Ajax, © Ontario and Mathew Drenters of Brampton, surfaced from the dive. The three had apparently been diving around the Gunilda, a shipwreck located just off Copper Island. All three were experienced divers with Barrett himself -hav- ing 35 years of diving experience. Police were first notified of the diving accident at 6:35 a.m. Saturday morning. The report said a diver had an accident and was suffering from the bends and was in need of assistance off Copper Island. Constables Logan' and McPherson, using Logan's per- sonal boat, went to the sccne but failed to locate any boat after Fire Week By Norm Gladish MNR Fire Prevention Technician On Friday, August 11, a 200 hectare prescribed burn was ignit- ed at mid-afternoon. Within the hour, 4 smoke column 2,000 metres high provided a spectacu- lar sight for residents of " Manitouwadge, some 20 km south west of the burn. But preparation work resulting in this smoke began last winter when trees were still being har- vested from the site. The first step in the planning process was the decision by woods industry and government forest management people to utilize fire as a site preparation. tool. Alternative methods were mechanical - various scarification techniques or use of herbicide sprays. At the Pearly Lake site, burning was the most economical choice. Continued on page 5° The scarch resumed Sunday for the missing diver with an underwater camera which devel- oped problems around. 140 feet down. Superior Diving members from Thunder Bay dove to the wreck, about 240 deep but failed to find anything. They returned the underwater camera to Thunder Bay for repairs and the camera was back on the scene Monday and used until 3 a.m. Monday morning. Tuesday saw Can Dive, a ae 4 £ Mississauga based firm, at the scene with a self propelled under- water camera. It was used in the search Tuesday and Wednesday when it became hung up on the rigging of the shipwreck. A larger unit was sent in Thursday, but at 3:45 p.m. the body of Barrett was found float- ing at the surface. A Ministry of Natural Resources boat and Chuck Hutterli's boat also assisted in the search.. YOUR FOREST... YOUR RESPONSIBILITY Mr. B.J.
