Retrievers make best guide dogs By Alice Scott A friend of mine, who happens to also breed Labradors, once said thatthe most emotional and grati- fying time in her life was watch- ing a dog from her kennel become a graduate seeing eye dog. Receiving a "Best in Show" at a conformation show couldn't even come close. These dogs are temperament tested at seven weeks of age and then placed in a foster home for one year. Like the independence dogs, the foster parents must train and love these pups and then give them up. It then takes 12 weeks to train each guide dog. There is still no guarantee that the dog will pass all tests required for a seeing eye dog. These dogs are asked to nego- tiate through congested traffic, cover railway tracks, ascend esca- lators, descend in elevators, go through revolving doors and avoid obstacles. Labrador retrievers and Golden retrievers are the most popular breed now usct. The "Lions Club of Ganada" have been strong supporters of the Guide Dog facilities in the U.S. and Canada since the start of Guide Dogs.
