Non-profit and volunteer groups, student and town coun- cils, school boards and others delivering 'an eligible service may qualify. Intended to provide supple- mentary financial assistance specifically for projects, it will help make possible many initia- tives that deal with the special needs of the north that would oth- erwise not be possible. Depending on category, up to $25,000 is available. However, it is intended to provide supplemen- tary funding for projects where present funding sources are either insufficient or inadequate. The SNAP program, as it is commonly referred to, is a three part program with criteria briefly outlined as follows: 1) Health and _ Social Program Assistance Non-profit volunteer groups may receive a grant to host work- shops, seminars, studies and con- ferences aimed at developing the skill/knowledge level of partici- pants in the social, health and development areas. Eligible costs may include: advertising, production costs, honoraria and facility rentals, up to 75 per cent of eligible costs to a maximum of $10,000. Minor capital costs of a facility and acquisition of furniture/equip- ment up to 75 per cent of eligible costs to. a maximum_of $25,000. 2) Arts and Cultural Program Assistance Northern arts/cultural groups may receive a grant to sponsor a workshop or tour in Ontario. Southern Ontario arts and culture groups may also receive a grant to tour Northern Ontario. The program is intended to enhance the quality of cultural life in Northern Ontario and to allow Northerners to participate fully in Ontario's cultural main- stream. Eligible costs include: fri: accommodation, advertising, pro- duction costs, honoraria and facil- ity rentals, up to 75 per cent of eligible costs to a maximum of $10,000. 3) Northern Travel Assistance Travel grants may be provided for volunteer, non-profit groups to attend or participate in health, social, arts or cultural confer- ences, seminars and workshops. Sports events may be considered wherever sponsorship, competi- 'tion, participation or skills demonstrations are not available regionally. Distance travelled within Canada must exceed 300 road kilometres each way; that portion of travel expenses incurred out- side of Canada is not eligible. Eligible expenditures include: meals, accommodation and trans- portation costs as documented by receipts. Up to 50 per cent of eli- gible costs to a maximum of $250 per person, or a total grant of $5,000 per group will be consid- ered.
