Ontario government passes resolution calling for small post offices to stay open On December 1, 198, the Ontario Provincial Government passed a resolution condemning the Canada Post Corporate Plan. The Plan is to close, amalgamate and privatize some 5,221 post offices in rural Canada within the next seven years. The resolution introduced by Howard Hampton, NDP M.P.P. from Rainey River, was unani- mously passed by all parties in the House. Resolution #47 is as follows; "That, in the opinion of this House, recognizing that the mail service in the communities such as Fort Frances and Kenora and many smaller rural communities of Northwestern Ontario will deterio- rate due to the fact that the sorting of the mail will no longer take place in these communities, but instead be moved to a central facili- ty, the government of Ontario should condemn Canada Post for this action, and the failure to recog- nize the importance of quality mail service for the rural communities and small towns of Northwestern Ontario, and the government of Ontario should urge the govern- ment of Canada to halt immediate- ly these plans to cut service and to maintain and improve rural postal This is the sixth provincial gov- ernment to pass such a resolution, plus hundreds of municipal govern- ments. Hundreds of thousands of individual tax payers have also shown their disapproval by signing petitions and letters to the Prime Minister of Canada. As states during the debate in the Legislature, "The point is that it (Canada Post) is suffering because we have a government in Ottawa that is not interested in improving the Postal service, that it is interest- ed only in attacking the postal ser- vice, and is going to make rural Ontario, small town Ontario, and small-town Canada pay for its inability to make the postal system work in the black." Mr. Johnson, Conservative MPP for Wellington, who supported the resolution, said, "It is a good reso- lution, but could be better.....1 would like to see the resolution expanded." The Legislature further heard: "It matters not to me if you are a member of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, you are a member of the letter carriers' union or you are from the postmasters' associa- tion. You do not make the orders, you do not give the marching orders and you do not make the decisions; you simply follow the tules. To blame some postal worker in CUPW who is making $35,000 a year, to say that it is because he or she is making $35,000 a year that some other part of the postal ser- vice is suffering, does not make any sense to me."
