OPP urge safe hunting to combat careless shootings For many Ontarians, the hunt- ing season represents a challeng- ing time of the year spent in the great outdoors. Unfortunately, however, hunting often results in careless accidents that could easi- ly be avoided. The most common hunting accidents involve careless use of firearms and getting lost in the bush. Both can be avoided by tak- ing the following precautions: ¢ Treat every firearm as if it is loaded e Never point a gun at anything you do not intend to kill * Know where your firearm is pointed at all times + Never fire from a vehicle ¢ Never carry loaded guns in vehicles. Unload the guns before climbing fences, jumping ditches or walking through dense bush _ * Unload all guns after return- ing to camp ¢ If hunting with a partner, always know where the other per- son is ¢ Never overload. a boat, and ensure weight is evenly distribut- ed even if it means making more trips back and forth. Life jackets should be. worn by everyone on the boat ¢ Wear fluorescent orange or red clothing, not camouflage gear, so that you are highly visible in the bush Have a map of the area and a compass at all times * Establish a time table with a friend or relative, so they'll know when to expect you back from - your trip ¢ Take extra clothing that is warm and waterproof to protect yourself from hypothermia.
