Page 2, News, Wednesday, November 2 , 1988 We'll soon be knee-deep in Christmas gifts By Helene Ballard Another week gone by; before you know it we will be knee-deep in Christmas shopping. Somehow this big holiday does not mean the same anymore -- I guess I am getting too old, but you know I think it's because the true meaning of Christmas is gone. Now it is a contest to see who can spend more money to buy gifts we can't afford on someone we really don't care that much about. It's sad because we could -spend only half that money on gifts and send the other half to the millions of starving, homeless people in this cockeyed world we live in. Things have been quiet around here this past week. Our Bridge playing friends were in on the 25th for an afternoon of cards. Our residents enjoy this so much, we thank our friends for their kindness. Our dear lady, Mena Mahoney, has been ill these past few weeks and, believe me, she is missed. We all wish you a speedy recovery so you can be back with us. No doubt folks are Il ready to watch hockey on t.v. on Saturday nights. I hope your favourite base- ball team won the world series; this should make Tony Costa real happy. I am too. At this time I would like to invite you nice ladies in town to join our Ladies Auxiliary to Birchwood. We would like to see more members. It's a worthwhile cause and it helps the residents. You know, when you help others it comes back to you. We have our monthly meetings on the second Thursday of each month, so come on ladies -- how about joining us? Well, I guess this is all for today, so I'll close with this wee bit for the 'Seniors around town'. "Don't let people say you're getting older...just hit them with your cane and keep smiling." Neighbours are a great source of help to prevent theft Is your neighbourhood a poten- tial target for break-ins and van- dalism? It could. be if you and your neighbours are not working together to.look after each other. More and more, people are realizing that they can make the difference in crime prevention. Programs such as Neighbourhood Watch are growing in popularity across the province. If you don't know your neigh- bours already, get to know them. This is the most important step toward preventing crime. Lise, Kyle, Kane and Melanie when neighbours keep an eye on each other's property. Crime Prevention Week, Oct. 30 to November 5, is a good opportunity to review some home security measures. You can help prevent crime in your neighbour- hood by taking the following pre- cautions: * If you plan to be away, even if only for a few days, inform your neighbours of your plans and give them a number where you can be reached. Leave a key with them so they can check on your house. ' e Introduce neighbours to rela- tives or friends who will be stay- ing during your absence, so they won't mistake your house-sitter for an intruder. ¢ Have a neighbour park a car in your driveway. e Have a neighbour pick up your mail. * Cancel regular deliveries while you are away. * Keep your garage or shed locked to prevent a thief from obtaining tools to break into hous- es in your neigbourhood. ¢ Offer to look after your neighbour's house if they are planning to be away. Following these tips can make your house and neighbourhood a more secure place to live.
