Portfolio A Northshore Photographer's BIRCH MAGIC PHOTOGRAPHY Local photographer Susan Johnson Hewson has authored a Series of articles for the News dealing with the technical and artistic aspects of photography . The series will examine how local amateur photographers can better appreciate the camera and the subjects which they choose to photograph. The first article makes argu- ments for recognizing photogra- phy as an artform. The other arti- cles will deal with specific techni- cal aspects that should enhance the artistic content of your own Photos and help you and others appreciate your photographs even more. Photography as an Artform By Susan Johnson Hewson Whether or not photography is an art may be answered by the fact that a camera can capture beauty, but a photographer can actually create beauty, feeling and mood. You are free to interpret -- not just reproduce -- the world as you perceive it. A creative photographer uses the camera to mirror his/her per- sonality, thought, feeling, mood and temperament. The equipment becomes an unconscious extension of the photographer. Everyone likes to express them- selves, and through the medium of photography this can be very satis- fying and enjoyable. With cameras of today, we have great versatility with technical con- cern. I recommend a 35 mm SLR (Single Lens Reflex) camera with a standard lens between 45 mm and 55 mm. This lens loosely approximates the subject as seen by the human eye. You should become thorough- ly familiar with your camera, and in time you may want to experi- ment' with other lenses such as a zoom or wide-angle lens. As you begin to photograph, take a second look. A casual observer might admire a subject for its beauty, but the astute photogra- pher will go a step further. You may notice delicate shades or inter- mingling colour, or lack of colour, depending on the available light. Check the background and fore- ground. Select your focus, and you are now ready to move in to elimi- nate what is not essential to the story or mood. The 'viewpoint you choose will - be a very personal one and your: picture will be as individual as you are. Here, a solitary, reaching tree seems to proudly face the setting sun. The barren, sterile foreground and background add atmosphere and mood to this picture and help illustrate how you can get the most from your own pictures.
