All our students have tutors and the pairs are working hard at find- ing ways to learn new things. We have a great variety of stu- dents in our programme. Some just want to improve the English skills they have; some are review- ing Gr. 3, some have Gr. 12. Others are learning to read and write for the first time. Still oth- ers are new Canadians who want to be able to read and write the language of their new country. There are as many different needs as there are students and we try to help each tutor-student pair meet those needs. The tutors who have students are working very hard. They are finding creative ways to teach reading, writing, spelling and math to their own students. They rely on many sources for help and information. The schools have been very helpful; teachers have shared their special expertise with tutors who have problems finding materials. The library staff in both Terrace Bay and Schreiber have worked hard to find books and magazines of interest to tutors and their students. The Ministry of Education Independent Learning Centre has Adult Basic Literacy correspon- dence courses which have been ordered for some students. We are all new to this kind of programme and it will be a while until we know exactly how to handle each situation. But we are - all searching and learning every day. We still have some tutors who have not been assigned a student. They are all good people who have had some training but we just don't have the students. All of our students have a lot of other responsibilities. They can't take the kind of time that kids in school have to learn. And our tutors all have many other responsibilities too. Pit Bull - from page 4 out again to see why they were still agitated. When I looked down the driveway, the McBride dog was at the bottom and both of my dogs were straining on their leashes. Mr. McBride at that time was approximately two houses past my place and from what I could see he was not even aware that his dog was following behind. Upon seeing this, I went out- side and: proceeded to bring our dogs in. I put one dog inside and when I tried to bring the second dog in, she was straining very hard on the leash and slipped her collar. I was the owner of a Pit Bull and I thought I was a responsible owner. What I did not count on was the lack of responsibility of the other dog owner. Mr. McBride was not.walking his dog 'as is reported' nor was his dog on a leash. It was I who called the police to attend to this matter, and I must point out that it was approximate- ly 20 minutes before a police offi- cer responded to the call as he was in Schreiber at the time. It was not the police officer who destroyed the pit bull, it was my husband, at my request. My dog did not attempt to attack anyone on that day, nor did she make any attempt to attack the police officer, Mr. McBride or his granddaughter. She did not attempt to attack myself as I tried to intervene. If anyone was in danger of being attacked, it would have been at that time. In closing I will say this.... guilty! I owned a Pit Bull. In defense of my dog? I feel she was provoked into this attack by the behaviour of Mr. McBride towards his own dog as he pro- ceeded to yell and kick it to make it listen to his commands. I am truly sorry the McBrides lost their dog on that particular day. I too lost a dog. I agree the public should be educated and concerned about dog attacks, but I also feel that the education of dogs should begin at home! Sincerely, F. Boucher.
