Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, Novemb er 25, 1987, page 3 New district manager of MNR looking forward to life in Terrace Bay -- By Ken Lusk The News The new District Manager for the Ministry of Natural Resources, Terrace Bay, is a man who has spent his career up until now involved in many different aspects of natural resources. Ron Running, who most- recently comes from the Northeastern Regional Office in Sudbury, told the News he has a good picture of the technical aspects of what the MNR does. Running was the regional communications co-ordinator in Sudbury and had lived in the small community of Capreol for three years while doing that job. Prior to that job, Running was the district planner, Espanola dis- trict, and before that he held vari- ous technical positions in areas like timber, lands and parks, in such places as Pembroke and Whitney. Running replaces Paul Strassburger who has taken the position of district manager in Crimestoppers Crime of the week #47 Daytime Break and enters- The area immediately surrounding the city of Thunder Bay has experienced an increase in residential break and enters which occur during the day light hours. These break-ins generally take place in isolated locations, such as houses with large driveways and well-protected from the view of neighbours. It is quite common for the cu Iprits to drive into a private resi- dence, and when the door is answered, to ask for direction to a residence or to request to use the telephone. _ If there is no answer at the door, the culprits will slide open the patio doors, or simply kick in the door. Once inside, they will remove certain items which are easily portable, and have a high resale value. These items generally include: video cassette recorders, camera equipment, firearms, televi- sion sets, sterco systems, including amplifiers, cassette decks, compact disc players, speakers, and turntables, microwave ovens, jewellery and cash. On occasion, furs have also been removed. Generally, several persons are involved, and the persons responsible are in the homes for only a matter of minutes. Property with a value of thousands of dollars are stolen annu- ally in this manner. Crimestoppers will pay up to $1,000, this week, for informa- tion that leads to the arrest of the person responsible for this crime. Call Crimestoppers at 623-TIPS, that's 623-8477, or long dis- tance, toll-free, at 1-800-465-6844, if you have any information regarding this crime. "¥OU DO NOT HAVE TO REVEAL YOUR IDENTITY" Crimestoppers also pays cash for information on any unsolved crimes. Tannis, 9, Trent, 7, and Grant, 2 and-a-half. Running said he is interested in the outdoors and he enjoys canoeing, curling, fishing, hunt- ing and squash. Broad view SS "I have a good picture of the issues the MNR deals with," Running said. He understands "the needs of the people who depend on the resources here in Northern Ontario." = Running is interested in having a lot of input with the people here; in industry, recreation, all groups as well as the township. "There are so many demands on resources," Running said; "now to balance those demands." That is one facet of his job; making everyone happy. Is everyone happy? Running cited an example of these demands by saying the mills in the region, for example, have to be kept fed with the 80- year rotation of tree planting. The harvested areas in this region will be replanted in three years, Running said. "What is cut is re-generated." If roads have to be built in the. area, the resulting effect on trap- pers must be kept in mind. If roads are built, you have to realize what may happen to the fly-in tourist operators, he noted. "There are many demands on the area from different people. You have to find a balance- the greatest good for the greatest "number of people." Arrived in August Running and his family arrived in Terrace Bay at the end of August.
