Island Se n e "SLATE f 1025 Se Goin | aU: boaee gener Barnard Pt "Spiritual Bridges" By Mark Moss, pastor, Lutheran Church, Terrace Bay On a dark night on a road' from Jackson to Vicksburg, Mississippi, heavy rains washed a bridge away. When a truck driver saw ¥ the tail lights of the car ahead of him disappear, he knew something was wrong. Suddenly his own truck sailed silently through the black void where a bridge once stood, and he crashed |. into the river below. apse? He made it out of the cab; swam to shore, and sat there in the darkness. Car after car zoomed into the gap and crashed into the swirling water below. 16 people died that night. Each of them had faith in a bridge that was no longer there. Spiritually, there are millions of people today who have faith in a bridge that isn't there. So many people believe that by their good works, their character, their church membership, their morality, they will some- how cross the river of death to heaven. But the bridge is out! Yet from Genesis to Revelations the message is the same. The Good News is that God's Son, Jesus, has come, and He is the sure and only bridge to heaven. The bottom line of Christianity is-that Jesus Christ satisfies in death and in life! People cannot give the satisfaction that a man desires. Human nature says that a lot of friends, a lot of companionship, a lot of fellowship satisfies. But every friend will let you down. Every fellowship finally breaks up. ' Then you are alone- alone with your thoughts, your feelings, your desires. Only one Person can satisfy in life. His name is Jesus. He promises, "He who comes to Me will riever go hungry, and he who believes in Me will never be thirsty." (John 6:35). You have at least three needs: Need No. 1: You need to know who you are. A woman said, "I don't know who I am. I don't know why I am here. And I don't know where I am going." You know the feeling. And the Good News is that Jesus came from the Father into this world to tell you that your Father made you, that He, the Son, redeemed you on the cross so that you might have new life. He can give you worth, self-esteem, joy, peace, forgiveness, and membership in the very family of God itself! You become His through a personal faith - relationship. Need No. 2: You need to know that you are loved. Someone said, "Just put your arm around me once in awhile when I get mean." We all get mean. The Good News is that God is so powerful and His love so unlimited that He can hug you no matter how mean or hurt you may be. - He loves you perfectly. He loves you totally. And He wants you to study the Bible from cover to cover to discover just how great His love is for you! Need No. 3: You need heaven. You are not going to be here very long. The Bible says that your life is like a flower and the grass, here today and cut down tomorrow. The Good News is that. you need not worry about disappearing. You can live with God in eternity, on a new earth and in a mansion that He is preparing for you, if you have received Him into your heart as Lord and Saviour. Through faith you can possess this and own this now as your very own. This is through faith in Jesus. He promises, "I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life." (John 6:47). = 'our new business in town, ts nd Bites By Helene Ballard Another week gone by; time sure goes by fast; before we know it Christmas will be here, I better be careful, folks will say I am rushing the season. We had our monthly birthday party on the 22nd. Our hostesses were the ladies from the Anglican Church in Schreiber. After the coffee and cake a lively game of bingo was enjoyed by residents and friends. Our birthday kids this month are Blanche Speck, Susan Gaulin, Thelma Christensen and Joseph Eyschen. On behalf of the residents I would like to thank these ladies for a very nice afternoon. I am sure everyone enjoyed them- selves. I was very happy to read about "The Sewing Nook" and I wish Elise Kenny all good wishes for suc- cess in her venture. I am sure there will be some- thing of interest to the ladies of Terrace Bay and Schreiber. I will make a point of going to see the many items in the shop. I do not sew but I do fancy work, candle wicking, ect., and so will look for some things along these lines. Good luck to you Elise Kenny and welcome to our town. Well, Hallowe'en will soon be here and time for fun- just be careful and watch for our little children; it's dark out and you know these wee folks do not always look before they cross the streets so I hope people driving will be extra careful so we can all have a safe holiday. Our residents enjoyed their bridge game Tuesday afternoon and we want to thank those who came to Birchwood; everyone enjoyed the afternoon so I hope we will see more of you now that summer is over; seems I have run out of things to say, so I'll close with this bit of humour.
