The Beatles never did make it to Schreiber but the next best thing, '*1964", will. It has been 20 years since Sergeant Pepper taught the band to play. Also, it has been almost that long since the Beatles ceas- ed to exist as a unit. But people don't seem to want to forget the Beatles' legacy or the recreation of it by imitation bands such as "1964", **1964" will recreate the golden age of the 'headshakers' right here in Schreiber at the Community Arena. The show, presented by the Northshore Selects Hockey Club, will take place at the Com- munity Arena on July 11 with all proceeds going to the Disability Action Group. Appropriate name **1964'? is an appropriate name for the group because it was in this year that the Beatles' strange hold on the charts began- they held the No. | spot for 14 straight weeks, beginning the first week in February). The group is comprised of Mark Benson as John Lennon, Gary Grimes as Paul McCartney, Greg George as Ringo Starr and Bob Miller as George Harrison. The four members of the group (three hail from Akron, Ohio, and one from New York) decided from the beginning to try something different with the show. The reason was because so many other Beatles groups had done the 'history-type' shows complete with multi-costume changes and narration. Instead of trying to recreate as much of their history as possible in one show, 1964 decided to "put a show together that was more like what you would have seen if you went to see the Beatles perform," said Benson (Lennon). "Wetry to pull off as much as we can with two guitars, bass and drums. We don't use any extra musicians or syn- thesizers." Devoted to accuracy The band's devotion to ac- curacy is complete. When they began the group, they sat down and watched hours of film- old Ed Sullivan shows, concerts from around the world, films and outtakes from films. They studied the group's sound, movements and gestures- every nuance. '""We accumulated all the guitars and amplifiers that were the exact same years and models that the Beatles played,"' explain- ed Benson. Service provides needed help to Northern Francophones According to Lise Provost and Mariette Langevin, employees of l'Accueil francophone de Thunder Bay the centre has in- troduced a creative approach to provide adequate services to the Francophone population of Nor- thwestern Ontario. The two started providing the services on September 2, 1986. The demands from the people of. Thunder Bay and the outlying areas have been overwhelming; not only from the Francophone population but also from the professionals in the field of health, social services, courts, Worker's Compensation, etc. The two-employee operation provides support, orientation and translation services to the Francophone population. The bulk of immediate need services for the Francophones of Northwestern Ontario is taking place in Thunder Bay; services such as government involvement and specialized health services. A great deal of volunteeer work is involved in making this project a success. - The ongoing training for the staff and the administration of the program is all done by volunteers who have expertise in the field of health, social ser- vices, education, accounting, etc. The staff of the centre is also monitoring other French services provided to the Francophones of Northwestern Ontario to ensure that the population is getting high quality services.
