Page 14, Terrace Bay-Schrelber News, CHRISTMAS EXTRA, December, 1966 A story about a special lady by Bill LeGrand In Advent, we look forward to the Coming of Jesus Christ into our world as a small baby, vulnerable to the human condition. It's the season when we encounter the awesome, supernatural power of God being used to touch our hearts in the most natural of ways... having a simple, loving mother give birth to His Son. It's a moment when the far flung destinies of earthly time are stopped to observe God's time. And Mary is the central figure... far too often we embrace an otherworldly image of Mary: a virtuous, self- controlled lady of high station who ac- cepted her mission reverently. This hardly is found in scripture! Luke's Gospel allows us to see how this basic, peasant woman reacted... *'But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be." (RSV. Luke 1:29). . How could a virtuous young woman, betrothed to Joseph, help but be ap- prehensive? Gabriel had appeared to her "out of the blue", and announced that she was favored by God and would have His Son!! Here we observe the innocence and goodness that was Mary... a loving, obedient servant of the Lord who ] m ; W. hope your holiday is wrapped in warm thoughts and gifts of love as we express our sincere thanks for your generosity. LOCAL 665 couldn't imagine her role in history. God, in making known His Will, often was the unexpected. Out of thousands of Jewish women- many who were of higher station and greater poise and self-confidence- He chose Mary. While the angel assures her, we can only surmise the anxiety that Mary felt deep within her heart. Later, upon visiting Elizabeth, Mary has grown in stature and confidence... most likely by faith and struggle. Her announcement to Elizabeth is plain and humble, showing her obe- dience to God's Will. The glorious MAGNIFICAT (Luke 1: 46-55), which is often sung in Even- ing Prayer, reveals much of the quiet courage and faith of Mary: "*My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my saviour, For he has regareded the low estate of his handmaiden. We do Mary a disservice when we rob her excessively and overstress her regal nature; we also undermine Mary's centrality to Holy Scripture, when we diminish her accepted role in God's intentions for His Church. Mary, standing at the point of History where God enters our time and space, is very human, very warm and very living. It's her simplicity, her essential humanity that draws us closer to the divine nature of all things in creation. In the Anglican and other traditions, we have many hymns and songs of praise about Mary. My favorite is "Sing of Mary", a magnificant song that draws us closer to the essence of Mary's personhood, the way by which the incredible acts NN DEC. 24 OPEN TILL 5:00 p.m. Dec. 27 OPEN 9:15 a.m.-5:30 p.m. k; "SETS CLOSED JANUARY ist PHONE 825-3666 RON and NANCY JENSEN and FAMILY of God become credible: '*Sing of Mary, pure and lowly Virgin Mother undefiled Sing of God's own Son most holy, who became her little child. Fairest child of Fairest Mother, God the Lord who came to Earth, Word made Flesh, our Very Brother, Takes our Nature by his Birth.' (Hymn 807:1 Book of Common Praise). From Mary, we see how, "the word became Flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth." (John 1:14 RSV). You see, Jesus became "our brother" and understood his human nature from the love of a special lady, His Mother. His divine nature and mission of Light to a world of Darkness would become more meaningful in time because of a mother's love. Bill Le Grand. Fun craft project for the kids to make Children enjoy the activi- ty of holiday preparations, such as wrapping gifts for family and friends; you can include them in these preparations by letting them make gift tags. All that is. needed are some plain index cards, short pieces of ribbon, yarn or colored string, a hole punch, and some_odds and - ends of wrapping paper. Have the youngsters fold each card in half, then have them punch a hole at the top corner of the fold. Show them how to cut out motifs from odds and ends of wrapping paper, making sure that the designs are small enough to fit on the folded card. You can also use old greetings cards for this purpose. Glue a motif to each card, and draw the bits of ribbon or string through the holes of each card for tying onto packages. If the children prefer, they can also draw simple motifs such as trees, stars or Christmas ornaments on the cards with either crayon or felt tip pens. These little tags also make charming decorations for a small tree. In another variation on these index card gift tags, you can have _ the youngsters punch holes about a quarter of an inch apart, along the edges of each card. Have them weave brightly colored yarn in and out of the holes, with the yarn making a border around the edge of the card. Tie the ends together in a knot. Have the youngsters let- ter an appropriate message such as "'To Dad" or **To Auntie' on one side of the card, and "'From Jimmy"
