Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, October 29, 1986, page 9 In a letter to Lake Nipigon MPP Gilles Pouliot, the Chairman of VIA Rail admitted that until the company finds replacements for ticket sales agents at the Schreiber train station, VIA customers will have to continue purchasing their tickets at the bus depot in Schreiber instead. Lawrence Hanigan, in a letter sent as a reply to an inquiry from Pouliot, said VIA has not yet found private firms or individuals prpepared to undertake the ticketing sales and bag- gage services for compensation on a commission basis. Earlier this year, VIA decided to no longer employ CP Rail operators for ticket sales and baggage handling in Schreiber, Cartier, and White River as a cost-cutting measure. "'In order to ensure the future of rail passenger services, VIA has been exploring every means to reduce costs while. retaining all essential customer services," Hanigan said in the Oct. 10 letter. "An important element of this pro- gram is the replacement of CP... employees with VIA's own employ- ees, particularly where VIA requires only part time work or where duties can be discharged more cost effect- ively by agents paid by commission." Pouliot, who represents Schreiber provincially, wrote to VIA to object to the company's decision, which the MPP said will force VIA's passeng- ers to carry their own baggage and make it more difficult for them to purchase their own tickets. "Unfortunately, until these (ticket and bagge) agents are found, as you observe, customers will have to pur- chase tickets at the bus depot in Schreiber...or at the first open ticket office en route,'" Hanigan explained. He also pointed out that customers have the option of reserving by tele- phone and receiving their tickets by mail, provided they reserve at least 10 days in advance of their departure. "'Passengers requiring assistance with their baggage should ask the train baggage man-or a trainman to help them," Hanigan suggested in the letter, sent from VIA Rail Canada's head office in Montreal.
