Although its official opening won't take place until June 19, the Canada Employment Centre for Students in Terrace Bay and Schreiber is already open for business. The Student Placement Officer for the area, 19-year-old Jacki Speziale of Schreiber, actually be- gan work on May 31 after completing her first year in a four year psychology course at Lakehead Univ- ersity in Thunder Bay. The main role of the centre will be to try and place students in summer jobs, Speziale explained. This will also take place in the 400 other centres in the country. The Terrace Bay office, Placement officer which also has a sub-office open one day a week at the Schreiber Rec Centre, serves the entire area, in- cluding Pays Plat and Ross- port. Manitouwadge, Nip- igon, and Marathon have placement centres of their own. The Terrace Bay cen- tre is located at the town Recreation Centre. "*The majority that reg- Jacki Speziale of Schreiber became the Student Placement Officer for the entire Terrace Bay area on May 31. She is shown here standing in front of the Job Board, which serves to show what summer job openings are available. Rossport, Ont. Rossport Harbour" ister at the centres are high school students,'" she said, adding that there is no age restriction for registration, as long as the person att- ended school last year and intends to return this fall. "We even get Grade 7 and 8 students," Speziale noted. As of June 11, there were 66 students registered at the local office, though she expects that number to increase over the next few weeks as high school stud- ents complete their year. By the end of the summ- er last year, there were ap- proximately 100 students registered at the local off- ice, with roughly the same total expected for this year. Speziale has already vis- ited the area high schools and explained the centre's services to students look- ing for employment. She told them that when they come to the office they will get registed by filling out a card, which will be kept on file. : The card will specify such information as what the student hopes to get as a summer job and his or her past work experience. The centre also features a Job Board, on which openings are posted, much like those seen at Unem- ployment Centres across Canada. Speziale explain- ed that if there is a job on the board that a registered student is particularly inter- ested in, they can ask about it. Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, June 18, 1986, page 7 Terrace Bay placement office for students now open "If they happen to qual- ify for the job, I'll give them a referral slip for it," Speziale said. "I'm here as a screen, in a way, to make everything go smoothly be- tween the employer and the (job) applicant."' She finds most of the Job Board openings by can- vassing the area employers either by phone or in per- son. Right now there are 25 openings on the Job Board, with many more expected to be posted over the next two months. '*A lot of the summer jobs don't start until July," she pointed out. "There will also be some casual jobs opening up for stud- ents to take the place of people going on vacation."' She said that most of the other positions are maint- enance jobs, though there are also a lot of orders for babysitters, with a few jobs in sales, clerical, construct- ion, and at the local MNR district office. Casual work, which is defined as a position that lasts only five days or less, is also available. Speziale hopes to have all place- ments filled by the end of the program, scheduled to be completed in August. The Terrace Bay office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays and from Wednesdays to Fri- days. On Tuesdays, she visits Schreiber, and can- vasses employers there. The official opening and Open House will be held at the Schreiber office, at 11 a.m. on June 19. The Open House was held at the off- ice in Terrace Bay last year she said.
