Bone up on your health (NC) -- If you are in your twenties, thirties or forties, now is the time to "bone up"' on your calcium and en- joy regular exercise. Don't wait for later. Research indicates that diet and exercise play a major role in the pre- vention of osteoporosis, the bone disease that afflicts some 250,000 Canadian women, most of them over the age of 60. | Canada, women should consume 800 miligrams of calcium per day. (One cup of milk contains about 300 mg of calcium.) The Osteoporosis Society of Can- ada recommends more calcium. Women who are pre-menopausal should get 1,000 mg. per day ac- cording to them and post meno- pausal women need 1,500 mg. per day. You may know an older woman who has broken a hip in a minor fall, or has shrunken in size. Maybe you also know someone who has de- veloped a . "dowager's hump." These are two common examples of how women come to realize that they have osteoporosis. It is a silent enemy that develops slowly over a long period of time. But most cases can be prevented by adequate calcium intake and regular exercise. Osteoporosis occurs when there is a loss of bone and mineral. Bone mass increases until a woman is about 30. By this time, bone -- a living tissue which is constantly re- newing itself -- should be healthy. Tken, with age, there is some na- tural loss of bone. This speeds up in the five years following menopause, when women lose about ten per cent of their bone mass. So the time to build strong bones to prepare for this"change is in adolescence, the twenties, thirties and forties. According to Health and Welfare If you don't like milk, then try smoothies in the blender: fruit juice, non-instant skim milk powder and water, fruits in season, sun- flower seeds, and yogurt. Cheese, and certain vegetables such as broc- coli and spinach are also good sources of calcium. e Limit coffee and alcohol.' Large amounts rob your body of calcium. e Avoid high-protein packaged diets. They can cause you to lose calcium. e Eat calcium-rich foods, especially milk products. e Exercise regularly -- whole body activities such as walking (especially with. a backpack), aerobics or skiing. "e Eat a balanced diet that includes calcium-rich foods, starting right now. Remember, the time to make the best investment of your life is to- day. Every gram of calcium is a good investment in the future health of your bones.
