by Phyllis Campbell Dear Editor: The construction of the CPR across Canada in the early 1880's was an impor- tant stage in the develop- _| ment of your community. | In 1886 the first transcon- « tinental passenger train crossed Northern Ontario leaving Montreal on June 28 and arriving in Port Moody on July 4. This year marks the ] 100th anniversary of that | event. The Ministry of Citizenship and Culture | was approached regarding ] participation in celebrating | this historic anniversary, and wishes to stimulate | community involvement in commemorative activities. I would like to invite your readers, especially seniors, to submit their recollections of the building and settling of | your community to your | newspaper. Stories would be submitted from May 1 to August 31 to your newspaper. At the end of that time, a booklet of the stories, with comment by a Nor- thern historian could be published. The booklet would be used for local history purposes or for en- joyment of the reading public. Should you decide to participate, please publish the attached letter during March and April so that people can be working on their stories. Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, March 19, 1986, page 13 Dear Reader: In 1886 the first transcontinental passenger train made its way from Montreal to Port Moody, B.C. The building of the CPR through the Canadian shield across Northern On- tario marked the beginning of many settled northern communities. This year marks the 100th anniversary of that first transcontinental train. Perhaps you recall the ear- ly days of this community and have seen many developments over a long period of time. Perhaps you worked on the railway, perhaps you or your parents helped to establish schools, churches or other social organiza- tions that contribute to set- tling a community, perhaps you lived along the line and went to a school car for your schooling. Maybe you came from another country and brought customs with you that are now part of the Northern Ontario scene. (Remember the advent of the outdoor sauna?) As a celebration of this anniversary, this newspaper, in partnership with the Heritage Branch of the Ministry of Citizen- ship and Culture, invites readers to submit their recollections of the early days of the community and recall the changes over time. Together, these stories will help our unique iden- tity to emerge. Some of them will be collected into booklet form. Publication of the stories will begin on May 1 and continue until the end of August. Please share with us "The Way Your Booklet of stories planned Remember It." Mail your stories to The Terrace Bay- Schreiber News, P.O. Box 579, Terrace Bay, Ontario, POT 2W0O; Attention: Con- rad Felber, Editor. Thank you.
