Terrace Boy-Schreiber News, Wednesday, February 19, 1986, page 5 VIP Penner peeved Cochrane-Superior Member of Parliament Keith Penner has sent let- ters to the Secretary of State and the Minister of State for Youth earlier this month to complain about the "'very disappointing" decision by the federal government to cease fun- ding of the Katimavik program. *'This decision is very disappointing and discouraging to the youth of this country," Penner said in both letters. "While I understand the govern- ment's desire to reduce the deficit, it should not be done at the expense of Canada's youth."' Penner told the Secretary of State, the Honourable Benoit Bouchard, that it is difficult to understand why a pro- gram which is so cost ef- fective has been cancelled. The progrdm has won na- tional and international ac- claim in its ten years of operation. Katimavik of- fers a chance for young people to mature, gain self- respect, and learn new skills. In his letter to the Honourable Andree Cham- pagne, the Minister of State (Youth), Penner said, "I ask that you, spokesperson for Canada's youth, make strong representation to your Cabinet colleagues ... in order to reverse this detrimental decision."' He pointed out that the program has_ provided meaningful experience to the youth of the country, while offering essential ser- vices to municipalities and community organizations.
