Page 2, Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, February 12, 1986 Terrace Bay Council applies for ONIP grants The Terrace Bay Township Council has ap-~ plied for $2.4 million in Ontario Neighbourhood Improvement Program (ONIP) grants, although Reeve Ollie Chapman ad- mitted that there is little chance the community will actually receive anywhere near that amount when its application is processed. Reeve Chapman ex- plained that the town "may get something or we may get nothing" but added that it doesn't hurt to ask. "There are areas in which we feel eligible,"' she said. The deadline for sending in ONIP grant ap- plications was Jan. 31. Before sending in the ap- plication, Council had to establish a list of priorities that any ONIP grant would go to should some money be approved. After some discussion at a recent meeting, Council felt the first thing on the list should be public indoor recreation facilities, which would include updating and improvements to the town arena and swimming pool. Second on the list was outdoor recreation facilities, including the ski hill, with social facilities like a potential Senior Citizens Drop-In Centre coming in third. Water main _-- im- provements got the fourth spot while curb and sidewalk projects had the fifth position on the list. Sixth was the town's road and street project, and sewer mains came in seventh. At the bottom of the list of priorities for grants were Slate Islands ... subject to land use Plan continued from page 1 Manager of the Ministry, P.A. Strassburger, at P.O. Caribou and beaver ex- ist in high numbers due to the lack of natural predators on the islands. There are also about five identified campsites on the islands and a number of unauthorized cabins. street lighting, the propos- ed Day Care Centre, and parks, in that order. Reeve Chapman noted that if some grants were ap- proved, the money wouldn't be "on stream" for quite some time yet. "'Any grants are con- tingent on the fact that we get a Property Maintenance and Occupancy Standards By-Law under the Planning Act," she added. "We haven't got one yet, but we have talked about it for years."' Such a by-law is now in the works. Provincial lottery grants, on the other hand, have already been approved for both' Terrace Bay and Schreiber, according to a news release from. the Ministry of Tourism and Recreation. Schreiber will receive $4300 for improvements to its Curling Club while im- provements at the Terrace Bay Arena will be partial- ly paid with a $12,802 grant to the Recreation Committee. Reeve Chapman said the Wintario grant had been applied for two years ago and that the money actual- ly awarded is less than the Recreation Committee was originally expecting to receive. first child, Bethany Krystal Born January 27, 1986, Vic- toria B.C.
