Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, January 29, 1986, page 7 Schreiber Sabres win NBC tournament by Conrad Felber The Schreiber Sabres emerged as the winners of the second annual Terrace Bay No-Body Contest (NBC) held on the January 18 weekend, winning the championship game in a tough battle with the other finalist team, Red Rock Superiors. Letters to the Editor Dear Editor: I would like to make some comments I read on the Day Care Centre I read in your latest issue, especially that one com- ment that it takes two in- comes to put bread on the table. Maybe for a single parent, but certainly not married couples with children whose husband works at our local plant, because if they do then I think they need some priority changing. Nobody paid my babysitter when my wife went out. That came out of my pay cheque when we could afford it. I made house payments, but I drove a secondhand car for 20 years too. I had no boat or truck or skidoo in the yayd. Now our children are grown up and on their own, the house and renova- tions are paid for, and we have started to put away a little bit for our retirement days ahead. Town taxes are going up, hydro is going up, and I have to start paying babysitters too with my tax dollars? I'm willing to put dollars into programs for the less fortunate. If the Day Care users want to pay 100 per cent of the cost, then by all means build'it, but please look on my side of the coin too before you make a full commitment to your project. I think Town Council should tell the people of Terrace Bay exactly what the taxpayers' com- mitments are in this project before approval. Ken Johnson Terrace Bay Dear Editor: I am, and will remain, unalterably opposed to Day Care Centres unless I can have a guarantee from our civic and provincial leaders that no tax dollars will be squandered on such a hare- brained scheme. The 'noisy minority is hereby given notice by one membér of the silent minority that we are neither convinced nor confused by buzz words such as '*parent feet --. "preschooler socialization skills*" and "career choices."* Here are our buzz words: **Tax dollar sub- sidy for babysitting for mothers who choose to work.** "It didn't take two in- comes to put bread on the table,"" one committee member stated, presumably _ referring rhetorically to some vague past period when she ob- viously believes times were a lot easier, financially speaking. Do these people serious- ly believe things were easier 20, 30 or 40 years ago? I've got news -- it doesn't take two incomes The Sabres were just one of 11 teams entered in the contest. Teams were entered from Nipigon, Geraldton, Marathon, Ter- race Bay, Schreiber, and Red Rock. Imperial Esso and Carl- ing O'Keefe sponsored the event, which came to a conclusion on January 19 at to put bread on the table now either. But it does take two incomes to put bread and serve it off a silver platter in an $80,000 to $100,000 home. Not on my tax dollar you don't! This committee has made a grave © strategic mistake. They've got me the Terrace Bay Arena in an exciting showdown bet- ween Schreiber and Red -Rock. The championship game was a tight affair throughout, with the teams trading goals up to the mid- dle of the third period, at which time the score was tied; 3-3. mad. This is the "last straw" example of narrow- minded pressure groups trying to find ways of frit- tering away our belaboured tax dollars. Signed, an ex-member of the Silent Majority, W.B. The Sabres did not waste the golden opportunity, and popped one in behind the Superiors goaltender on the power play with just under seven minutes left. That tied the game again, 44. For the next five minutes ooth teams had a number of scoring chances but neither could capitalize. Then, with just 1:59 seconds left in the match, the Sabres put on the pressure and scored to take the lead at 54. Red Rock managed to - null their ooalie in the last Is business slow right now? After that it was all but over as Schreiber held on to win the game and_ the tournament. Mitchell Huls, the Red Rock netminders, was named the Best Goalie following the weekend championship, while Dale Ross of the Sabres took the Most Valuable Player trophy.-Scott Thompson of the Terrace Bay Canucks was judged as the Best Defenceman.
