'Page 2, Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, December 18, 1985 Plaza businesses want snow removal on Radisson Simcoe Plaza businessmen and women attended Terrace Bay Township Council's Dec. 9 meeting to complain about snow removal on Radisson Avenue ... or, rather, the lack thereof. Mike Moore, of Moore's clothing store, was the unofficial spokesman for the delega- tion of about a dozen con- cerned shop owners and managers. _'*The municipality seems to have some hesita- tion for snow removal at the back of our businesses on Radisson," Moore ex- plained. "It has been the past practice that the town would, remove the snow, but during the past couple of years this hasn't been Sa; Moore's establishment is similar to other businesses on Simcoe plaza in that his store faces the Plaza while the back door is on Radisson and private property. 'IT can understand the town's reluctance to remove snow from private property, but we don't FE JO! kindness, love and caring. | would like to wish my relatives and friends a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Inez McQuaig The office of (AB RE Se ee ity ) Bas With joy in our hearts, let us light up the world with the strength of our know what to do with the snow back there,"' he said. '*We can't put it on the street or on a neighbour's frontage ... it's a great inconvenience." He said snow removal at the back of the shops is very important because the shop owners park their cars there rather than take up space in the Plaza parking area. Councillor George Ram- say replied that the situa- tion has placed the council in a quandary. "If we accommodate you, we would open ourselves to the same re- quests from other businesses," Ramsay add- ed, noting the businesses on Mill Road which also have private property that sometimes requires snow "removal. '*Another problem here is liability," councillor Jim Files said. "Other com- munities do not take this responsibility. It could be a real can of hot water for the town."' Someone in the business delegation pointed out that some stores do not have Dr. J.E.M. St. Rose at the Schreiber Medical Centre will be closed on: December 24, 25, 26 and Jan. 1, 2, 3: 'Merry Christmas Happy New Year any access at the Plaza at all, like Granny's Nutrition Centre, which has its front door right on Radisson. "It's a touchy situa- tion,"' councillor Peter Romanuk admitted. "If we say yes to you, other peo- ple will come in and ask for the same." Romanuk also noted that if the town began snow removal on private property, they would be in direct competition to private contractors in the area. '*We have to realize that we did encourage you peo- ple to expand the town and yet we've put up this block against you," Reeve Ollie Simpson told the delega- tion. "I would like to see the town and the business people get along." : Clerk co-ordinator Larry Simons noted that agreeing to do the snow removal for the stores 'would be a com- mittment and therefore the township would be respon- sible for any damages that the snow removal crew. might cause. "These guys sure brought us a tough one for this first meeting,"'" Files said. Files is a new coun- cillor, and the meeting was the first one of the new three year session, after the inaugural meeting: which was held on Dec. 2. Reeve Simpson sug- gested that the matter be left with council for the time being, and the majori- ty of the councillors agreed. Councillor Jim Ziegler abstained from the entire matter, due to a con- flict of interest. After the meeting, Moore said he was not sur- prised by the things the council said about the sug- gestion, and added that he would wait for their response before *'passing judgment"' on them. But befor the meeting ended, council dealt with a number of other subjects on the agenda. Reeve Simpson said she expects to be at the Township Office to see Terrace Bay citizens on a weekly basis, beginn- ing in January. She also commended the town police for the way they handled "the situa- tion" earlier in the month. She was referring to a shooting incident in Ter- race Bay on Dec. 6 which left one man dead and a Schreiber man charged with first degree murder. Reeve Simpson admitted that there had been a few criticisms brought to her about some of the police methods carried out following the incident, but she had nothing but praise for the local force and Chief Russ Phillips. Simons calls letter "innuendo" continued from page 1 don't want to get into a shouting match with them,"' he said. "Perhaps it is best to let sleeping dogs lie, but | don't know,"' Simons said. '*Council could say that it agrees with the Board's concerns, but the onus to prevent all of this lies with each and every one of us."' Files said that if a letter is prpared by the Township, he would like a lawyer to see it before it is sent out. '"'This (Board) letter looks mean and small,' Ramsay said. "We don't want to act mean and small back." He did, though, suggest that Simons work With your support cancer can be beaten. a CANADIAN CANCER SOCIETY SOCIETE CANADIENNE DU CANCER Y The Lake Nipigon P.C. In other matters brought up at the meeting last week, a retail gasoline supply tender was award- ed to John's Texaco of Ter- race Bay, after three tenders were opened and read. ; Council agreed to pro- vide up to $75. for the pur- chase of gifts for residents at Birchwood Terrace. Council also voted in favor of a $100 donation from the Township to the On- tario Association for the Mentally Retarded. A motion was passed proclaiming Dec. 26 as an official holiday in Terrace Bay to be known as Box- ing Day. Reeve Chapman thanked councillor Romanuk for running the Township Christmas Party this year, though she noted that rum and rye were in short supply. "Beer isn't good enough anymore, I guess,"' Romanuk said in reply. Here's wishing you a bright and beautiful holiday season filled with warmth and good feelings. Merry Christmas to you ard yours!
