This tends to influence our thinking about our bodies. We forget that we have only one heart, two lungs, one liver, two kidneys, one stomach, one spine... and one life. Bodily organs are not disposable. And surgery is 'no simple procedure. Therefore, we should think about it very carefully and exhaust all alternate non- surgical methods of treat- ment before going "under' the knife."' First of all, we must recognize that all opera- tions, no matter whether they are called "major" or "'minor" offer a certain element of risk. Actuaries can give. you the percen- tage, but certainly death is a possibility with all surgery. Disability may be more frequent. And _ pain and hospitalization is certain. The risk depends on the complexity of the operation . and luck. . Certainly, open heart, brain surgery, and spinal surgery can result in more complica- tions than an appendec- tomy or a tonsillectomy. But people have been known to die from even the simplest of procedures. A conscientious surgeon will evaluate the situation and risk, and advise you based on your physical condition and his experience. But before you have that operation, it would be wise to weigh the alternatives. Of course the nature of some health problems, such as cancer, are such IMPERIAL MOTEL Needs full part-time waitresses. Call 824-2865 that you have very little time and very few alter- natives. But in most situa- tions, you do have a reasonable choice. One alternative, of course, is not to have the operation. Here, there are other risks involved. For example, if you have a hip joint problem, weigh the benefits you can expect (as well as the risks) against the pain and inconvenience you are experiencing. Another alternative is trying other methods of treatment. Have you ex- plored them thoroughly? Have you had your pro- blem diagnosed and treated by doctors of other disciplines? Perhaps they can advise a treatment that is less drastic than surgery. For example, many 'spinal and back problems which would require surgical procedure have been treated successfully with spinal manipulation by doctors of chiropractic. Chiropractic's record of correction has been ex- cellent with cases of "slip- ped disc" and sacroiliac problems. Likewise, case histories have shown chiropractic to be an effec- tive non-surgical method for the treatment of many other types of health pro- blems. Chiropractic utilizes the inherent recuperative powers of the body and the relationship between musculoskeletal structures and functions of the body, particularly of the spinal column and nervous system, in the restoration and maintenance of health. When all is said and done, in some cases, you may need surgery. And if you do, your doctor of chiropractic and every other conscientious member of the health team will refer you to a surgeon experienced in handling the problem. But on the other hand, you may not need surgery. Isn't it worthwhile to at least find out before you take the painful step... and accept the inherent risk? These health views are published by members of the Ontario Chiropractic Association in the interest of better public health. Pitch-In
