Kerrio Minister (7) Natural Mary Mogford Resources Deputy Minister Ontario Ontario Log Haul Safety Committee Meets in Dryden The Ontario log haul safety committee is pro- gressing toward its goal of safe transportation of forest products, advised Bill Lees, assistant deputy minister of Ministry of Northern Affairs and Mines, and chairman of the committee. Reporting on a meeting of the committee held on July 5, Mr. Lees advised that much progress has already been made. He said the industry has imposed safety compliance measures on its members, and the government has stepped up on-highway en- forcement of the safety regulations. "As a result,"' said Lees, "load security has improved -- con- siderably. But more needs to be done". The committee commis- sioned a technical study by the forest engineering research institute of Canada which reported in May on the industry's ex- isting load hauling equip- ment and practices, now, and engineering examina- tion is proposed, funded jointly by industry and the ministry of northern affairs and mines, aimed at developing and evaluating new load securing devices and hauling techniques. "We hope to have this new initiative underway very soon,"' said Lees. The committee is also taking a close look at the human element in the safe transport of wood," he added, "including skill levels, training needs and the attitudes of those in- volved in wood harvesing and loading areas, as well as the truck operators themselves". Mr. Lees also pointed out that Quetico Centre, with funding provided by the Ministry of Northern Affairs and Mines, is now offering a log truck operator training program. Each course is nine weeks long and involves intensive on-the-road training. The program can process up to 50 students annually. The Ontario log haul safety committee is com- prised of representatives from the Ontario forest in- dustry association, and the Ontario lumber manufac- turers' association, representatives from the Ministries of Northern Af- fairs and Mines, Natural Resources and Energy, Transportation and Com- munication and Labour, and representatives from the Ontario Provincial Police, the Forest Products Accidents Prevention Association, and Quetico Centre. _ Think of it as a contact lens for your ear.
