continued from page 2 $1,140 a year, up from $380. Multiply that dif- ference of $760 by, say 40 employees, and the extra cost to the employer will be more than $30,000 a year. That's equal to one well- paying job which won't be created because the money's going into the pension pot. The anti-employment aspect of the increase would normally be grounds for strong protest. But the pension pot is leaking and without a fresh injection of dollars, those who retire after 2005 will be hard put to find lumps of coal to warm. their golden years. The dilemma is not unexpected. It has been clear for years that the well would run dry. As Baby Boomers age and as the demographic bulge they created moves toward retirement years like a ro- dent through the digestive track of a snake, there will be more pensioners than people paying premiums. Also contributing to this chronic and deliberate underfunding has been the practice of lending the funds to the provinces at rates one or two points below market. And previous govern- ments have refused to raise premiums even. while enriching benefits, leaving us to pay the price now for past neglect. We can no longer afford not to raise premiums even though such a move can only slow employment growth. Perhaps the only positive note in this whole mess is that the new government is prepared to face the pro- blem and make the tough decision. That,_in itself, is a tune too long absent from Parliament Hill. TRANSPORTATION For sale, 1978 Datsun long box truck, 4 cylinder, 5 speed over drive, good running condition. Body needs work. M-26 Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, March 27, 1985, page 11 Little idling time required Knight Rider may have a computerized car but most of us need a little human input. By simply changing a few driving habits, car Owners can cut fuel con- sumption by 10 per cent. That could amount to a total saving of over a billion litres of gas and diesel fuel annually in On- 'tario alone. ee A lot of: myths have fallen by the Wayside since fuel conservation has becdme part of the modern pproach to driving. For example, drivers used to idle their ,cars to warm them up before moving, particularly in cold weather. Now motorists are finding that, even at -20 degrges C, most cars only require 15-30 seconds of idling before being drivep off gently. On warmer days, dars need no idling at all. Another common belief was that leaving a car idl- ing during short stops would use less fuel than turning it off and starting it again when the stop was over. It is now widely recognized that 10 seconds of idling uses more fuel than restarting the engine. Drivers are also finding that jackrabbit starts are best avoided because they increase fuel consumption. A smooth, steady accelera- one Marae YS tion uses less fuel and makes for a more comfor- table ride. Like the accelerator, the brake pedal should be us- ed slowly and evenly. Drivers can cut back on use of the brake by anticipating stops. Resting a foot on the brake pedal while driving is dangerous, increases fuel consumption and adds wear and tear to the brakes and transmission. . Dropping your speed slightly will have only a marginal effect on travel time but could put dollars in your gas tank. For ex- ample, a car 'travelling at 115 km/hr uses 20 per cent more fuel than one going 90 km/hr. Another easy way to conserve fuel' is to take those golf clubs out of the car, except of course when you are heading for the golf course. Carrying any kind of unnecessary weight around either in the trunk or on the top of your car just makes it work harder and use more gas. If you do take your car to pick up a quart of milk (walking would eliminate gas consumption altogether), consider stop- ping by the dry cleaners and the bank in the same trip. Combining several short stops into one long one will reduce overall fuel consumption and save you time as well. Plan ahead. And remember, when you run in to do those short errands, turn the car off. Idling costs money. For more driving tips contact Ontario Ministry of: Energy, GMS, Box 37, Queen's Park, Toronto} M7A 2B7.
