Page 2, Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, November 21, 1984 - Therefore Choose Life by KENNETH W. POTTIE, PASTOR "I call heaven and - earth to witness against you this day, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse; therefore choose life, that you and your descendants may live' (Deuteronomy 30:19). This quote from Scrip- ture was used as an op- ening by the Catholic Bishops of Ontario when on August 15, 1983, they issued their statement 'In Defence of Human Life."" The Bishops op- ened their statement by saying: "we feel com- pelled to speak in de- fence of human life and against its destruction by way of abortion. Our Judaeo-Christian _tra- dition honours the com- mandment of God: '*Thou shalt not kill' (Ex- odus 30:23). It teaches that each human being bears the image of God (Genesis 1:26;9:6) and that human life is a gift of God and is the basic human value."' They also state: "Our response to questions touching human life rests on firm trust in God's justice and love."- Not only Catholic Bish- ops, but many Christ- ians of all faiths, hold that abortion is wrong, sinful, and is an abom- inable evil. Those who choose life cannot be silent on this issue. Why must we speak out? The reasons are clear. In 1969, the Criminal Code of Canada was amended to allow abortions if the life or health of the mother were endang- ered. Because the law of the land says abortions are legal, this does not make it morally right. It is a fact that in our day and age, because of medical advancement, it is a rare case if a moth- er's life or health is in danger during preg- lives. STAG and DOE A Stag and Doe will be held in honour of Alain Zborowski and Carol: Squire at the Schreiber Legion Hall, Saturday, November 24, from 8:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. Everyone Welcome Sorry No Minors CARDS OF THANKS _ Pastor Johnson and Family wish to thank all those who shared with us at the Grandson Scott. We truly feel that the world has lost a very special person and it is com- forting to know that so many others care. Stan & Lola Spadoni & boys ESS ---- -- from home in "of the Child": and Darryl. IN MEMORY Williamson -- In loving memory of a dear mother Ileene who passed away on November 19, 1982 and a dear father Ken who passed away on June 15, 1984. Take them in your arms, dear Lord Treasure them with care, Make up for all they suffered, And all that was unfair. As angels keep their watch up there, Please God, just let them know, That we down here did not forget, We love and miss them so. Lovingly remembered and sadly missed Gary, Helen, Gordie, Linda, Bruce, Kathy nancy or at the time of birth of the child. As a result of the amendment in 1969, and since then, over 500,000 children in mothers' wombs have been killed by abortion in Canada, not to mention the near- ly 50 million who have also been aborted in the whole world. Our society is developing a disre- spect for life attitude. Anything that is not useful, or can hurt us, or that is not convenient, we want to get rid of - the deformed, the han- dicapped, the criminals (capital punishment the death penalty). We live in a violent and mater- ialistic and selfish so- ciety. The _ scientific machines that medical people use are meant to be used to help people, both in and outside the womb, to help them live a better life, not to destroy them. If we de- stroy healthy or un- healthy babies in the womb, we are opening ourselves to many other consequences. It will not stop there. Soon, those who do not meet the standard or supposed quality of what life should be, will be killed. This is beginning to happen in our country and many other count- ries even today. Scripture stands against all reason for abortion and leads the Christian to freedom from fear of mankind or want. The Lord has spoken very explicitly of the sanctity of prenatal life saying: "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you."' (Jeremiah 1:5). The psalmist, re- alizing this truth, stands in reverence before God and proclaims: "you created my inmost be- ing, you knit me to- gether in my mother's womb. I praise you be- cause I am fearfully and wonderfully made."' (Psalm 139:13-14). Sim- ilarly, the United Na- tions expresses this respect for life in the 'Declaration of Rights "The child by reason of his physical and mental im- maturity, needs special safeguards and care in- cluding appropriate legal protection, before as well as after birth'. When we hear people coming up with such slogans as: "Every child should be a_ wanted child'; "Every woman has the right to control her own body"; "No one should impose their re- ligious morality on others"; "Legal abor- tions are safe abor- tions"; "A fetus is nota - person', then let us consider the medical and other facts: - 18 days after conception the baby's heart is beat- ing; within 43 days, brain waves are trace- able; by the 11th week, all internal organs are present and function- ing. The child breathes, swallows, digests and urinates. The child is very sensitive to pain - recoiling from noise, heat and cold. After this time nothing new will develop or function, there will be only further growth and matura- tion. "Woman", by dic- tionary definition, means "female human being". Since the sex of a child is determined at conception and over half of those aborted are "female human _be- ings' then, obviously, not every woman has the right to control her own body. Religion did not discover when life be- gins, bioligists did. Re- ligion did not establish that at the moment of conception a unique and separate individual exists, geneticists did. No real legal abortion is _ without very real and serious risks to the phy- sical and emotional health of the girl or woman. Chances of a rape victim becoming pregnant are one out of a thousand. Because a rape victim is preg- nant does not justify killing the innocent child - the baby - '"Two wrongs don't make a right". We are called to choose life, not death. Jesus says: 'I have come to bring you life, life to the full". God loves us all and wants everyone to be saved. However, He is the Just Judge. He rewards good and punishes evil. This is a fact. We must listen and obey His command- ments and teaching. He tells us: "Suffer the little children to come unto Me". He wants us to look after the child- ren, all children, the weak and the healthy, the poor and the sick, the unborn and born, the deformed and hand- icapped. In my exper- ience in counselling married couples, not too . Many women experience nine months of pain in carrying their child in the womb; many wo- men, however, exper- ience many problems if they had abortions. I pray that Jesus, at the Last Judgement, will say to all of us: "For I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you made Me wel- come; naked and you clothed.Me, sick and you visited Me, in prison and you came to see Me"...And the King will answer; I tell you solemnly, in so far as you did this to one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did it to Me"..."and the virtuous will go-to ever- lasting life" (Matthew 25:31-46). We know and believe, as Christians, that included in the above persons are those in the womb of a mother, both healthy or unhealthy. Let us re- joice and give thanks that Jesus has given us life through His death and resurrection. : Hoo-' ray for Jesus, the Prince of Life, and the source of eternal life for all who serve Him! Empty Buses No one boarded the school buses in Terrace Bay and Schreiber the evening of November 15. Other suggestions such as driver training and first aid have already been implemented, as well as Homes for the Aged Meeting The Board of Manage- ment of the District cf Thunder Bay Homes for the Aged held their reg- ular monthly meeting at Birchwood Terrace Fri- day, October 19, 1984. Dave Ditchfield distributed a pamphlet entitled a "Guide to Student Transportation." With regard to the seat belt question, the committee reported that it had written to the Ministry of Transport- ation and Communica- tions on May 28. A reply was received on June 28. They were advised that a Transport Canada safety expert's advice was required before buses could be retro- fitted. A letter was written to Transport ' Canada who replied that it has not yet been de- termined whether seat beits will or will not provide safer school bus transportation. Testing was done in the summer of 1984 and the results should 'be available by the November Board ~" 1-800-465-3939 ~~ Your travel number talk directly to travel company Northern Ontario largest Meeting. As yet, this information has not ar- rived. The meeting moved outside where everyone was able to see one of the local school buses and the safety features like padded high back seats were pointed out. Some buses also have carpet along the side under the windows for warmth. Mr. Trottier explained that each driver must go through a 40 pt check system be- fore taking the bus out. Inside again, the meeting was summar- ized with the recommen- dation that the board be given all correspon- dence to this point and that the committee will request that the seat belt decision not be made until the results of the study are made available.
