Don't forget the kitchen Are you working to improve the energy- efficiency of your home? After adding insulation, storm doors and win- dows and glass doors on the fireplace, what's the next step? Consider the kitchen. Whether you're a gourmet cook or a frozen dinner fan, most all of us can improve our energy habits in the kitchen. In many homes, the largest amount of ener- gy in the kitchen is used by the refrigerator and freezer. To make these appliances more effic- ient, take as many items out at one time as pos- sible. Avoid opening the door and "window shopping." Some man- ufacturers have sug- gested that for every 30 seconds the refrigerator is open, it must run 30 minutes to catch up. The condenser should be kept clean of dust and lint. Manual defrost types should be de- frosted when the ice builds up more than % inch. Both dust and ex- cess ice cause the re- frigerator to run more often, and less efficient- ly. Many _ refrigerators are now equipped with "'energy-saver" switch- es that control the heat- er strips around the door. These heaters help evaporate excess moist- ~ 'humidity of TENDERS Tenders to be received up to November 14th, 1984 by The McCausland Hospital for the supply of furnace oil for the period January Ist, 1985 to December 31st, 1985. During the low winter, these heaters are not needed so the control should be set according- ly. : The'oven can be made into a very efficient cooking appliance by taking advantage of its insulation and large capacity to prepare oven meals. These take no more energy than cook- ing just one food. Preheating should be reserved for baked goods only, and today's well-insulated ovens can be tutned off about 15 minutes early and still finish cooking properly. Of course, insulation has little value if the oven door is opened fre- quently. Up to 20 per cent of the hot air can be lost each time the door is opened, so train your- self to use an oven timer. The cost of hot water for the dishwasher is far more expensive than the cost of the motor itself. Dishwashers generally take about 10-15 gallons of hot water, regardless of whether they are only slightly full or near ca- pacity. Many dishwash- ers are now designed with the option to turn off the heating element continued on page 14 YXYXYXXYIJIYSIYXSVIVILILIIL TOWNE CINEMA S Sod RK rs Wed.
