Noho tes Tax Tips for Seniors - Save your receipts! by JANE E. GREER The following arti- cle recently appeared in the newspaper "Espe- cially for Seniors". While the article is di- rected at Senior Citi- zens, I'm sure the regu- lar taxpayer will be in- terested in its content. '*Now that the 'stand- ard deductions' of $100 for medical expenses and charitable dona- tions has been remov- ed, effective with the 1984 taxation year, which permitted you to claim that amount with- out submitting receipts, it becomes important for you to keep all receipts for such payments. For medical expen- ses, save all receipts for any medical and den- tal expenses not cover- ed by OHIP, or reimbur- sed by other health plans. Also, and this is important, you can claim 'the premiums paid und- er private health insur- ance plans. While the government does not re- quire the filing of re- ceipts with your tax return for such premi- ums, keep them for your records, just in case you might be asked for them. There is a broad list of items covered under medical expenses, such as prescribed eyeglass- es, wheelchairs, even special telephone de- vices for the deaf, and the services of many different health profes- sionals, such as optome- trists, chiropractors and therapists. Save all your medical receipts and if you require further help, ask your local tax office for Interpretation Bul- letin ITp225 'Medical Expenses'. _ For charitable. dona- tions, save receipts for all donations to regist- ered charities - that is, where the receipt bears a 'Registration Num- ber" for income tax pur- poses. Your receipt can be valuable - keep them carefully! For more informa- tion on this and other government program- mes, please contact your nearest Northern Affairs office, located at 2 Gilbert Street, Penin- sula Building, Mara- thon, Ontario. Phone 229-1153 or for areas outside of Marathon, call Zenith 33160. THANK-YOU | wish to extend my heartfelt thanks, for all the Get Well cards and fruit | received when in the Hospital.
