Page 12, Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, March 28, 1984 High Tech solution to home heat loss It costs more than twice as much to heat a home in Geraldton than it does to heat the same house in Toronto. A colder climate, higher fuel costs and 'sometimes a lack of technological expertise all contribute to this chilling statistic. There's not too much northerners can do to change Mother Nature's ideas but many have de- cided to combat the use of "imported" fuels such as gas, oil and hydro through the use of woodstoves. As for the lack of tech- nology, something is be- ing done about that too. In co-operation with the a t 1 OF APPLIED In cooperation with The Terrace Bay Recreation Department is offering ZA 004 ART FROM THE OVEN. THE CONFEDERATION COLLEGE ARTS AND TECHNOLOGY - Photographic View - is is a photograph of a northern home. Thermogramic View - More than meets the eye: this thermogram is a "'heat picture" of the "same house. The light areas are where heat is escaping from the building. This shows' serious heat loss through the above-ground portion of the basement wall. Insulation would - be a good investment here. Ontario Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Northern Affairs has launched a pilot pro- ject to educate north- erners about such ener- gy problems as heat loss, moisture content, air circulation and in- sulation requirements. The project is being tackled in a unique way. The two pilot-project towns, Chapleau and Geraldton, were photo- graphed with infra-red video film which re- veals heat losses from the homes of residents. * Our MARCH TUNE UP SPECIAL MAY GIVE YOU ONE EXTRA LITRE OF GASOLINE IN TEN! "Computer Recall identification Sys.em (offer good until April 14, 1984) These films are being used to attract home owners to three-week information clinics staff- ed by four specially trained technicians from the Sault Ste.. Marie baseld firm of Thermo- Dynamics. The technicians ex- plain the heat loss films to the home owner and, along with other inform- ation about the home, suggest solutions to stop the heat loss. They also offer a breakdown of what the -- renovations would cost. The tech- nicians are also versed -in various heating sys- tems, safety, moisture control, and cooling methods for summer comfort. Bill Watts, a profes- sional engineer with Thermo-Dynamics, says that the Northern Af- fairs project will be a welcome programme to northerners who don't have access to first-hand energy information. The biggest advan- tage to the homeowner will be the ability to control energy and save money and it also pro- vides a more comfort- able home with reduced drafts. Ontario Northern Af- fairs Minister Leo Ber- nier says that his minis- try is providing the con- sulting services of Thermo-Dynamics be- cause it makes sense for northerners to get first- hand information gear- ed to the Northern On- tario climate than to rely on magazines from the United States for south- ern Ontario. "Because we have higher heat loss and more expensive energy costs, northerners have more to gain from ener- gy conservation," says Bernier. "Even the home owner with a rela- tively inexpensive wood heating system can save physical energy with an efficient home by cut- ting less wood."' The pilot projects in Chapleau and Geraldton 'may lead to larger ener- 'gy consulting ser- vices which would assist home owners through- out Northern On- tario.
