"" Superior West " dazzles local volleyball players by LYNNE BADGER Superior West of Thunder -Bay did not lose a game in their quest for the prize money at the Schreiber Goon Platoon Volleyball Tournament held on February 4 and 5 at Lake Superior High School in Schreiber. Scores of 15-0 and 15-2 were common when the other teams in the tournament faced their lightning spikes and the wall formed by the hands of the Super- ior West blockers which stopped most spikes from the other side. Confederation Col- lege of Thunder Bay managed to score 13 points against them and the local Schreiber Goon Platoon reached 12 points before suffering defeat. After Saturday's 6 team round robin, Superior West was firm- ly in possession of the first playoff spot. The Terrace Bay Selects played excellent volley- ball to capture second place and Confederation College and the Goon Platoon played valiant- ly against Superior West in the first Semi-final but lost 15-3 and 15-12. The other semi-final be- tween Confederation College and Terrace Bay Selects provided the most exciting games of the entire tourna- ment. Confederation ad- vanced to the final with a best of three record of 15-10, 12-15 and 15-13. The best of three final was over quickly with Superior West defeat- ing Confederation Col- lege 15-5 and 15-1. The winners were presented with 1984 Olympic vol- leyball pins. The tournament ran smoothly and provided some exciting volley- ball for players and spectators alike thanks to the Goon Platoon team who organized it, the officials, the Ladies Auxiliary to the Schrei- ber Guides and Brown- ies for providing re- freshments, Kevin Du- guay, the Schreiber Recreation Committee, Betty Tate, Bill Hous- ton and Kerry Powell whose willing co-opera- tion was greatly appre- ciated. The tournament _ it- self was a great suc- cess, however due to the weather the fund- raising dance was not well attended and the Goon Platoon would ap- preciate your support as they try to recoup their losses. Terrace Bay Minor Hockey Report by '"'THE PROPHET'"' North Shore Hockey Atoms at Mara- thon Feb. 4-5th Although they came back empty handed, things are looking pro- mising as they almost _ Terrace Bay Ringette Assoc. During the weekend of January 28-29th, the Terrace Bay Ringette Association hosted a ringette tournament. Ringette was developed twenty years ago as a winter team sport for girls and is an adapta- tion of floor hockey. Seven teams from Thunder Bay, Nipigon and Longlac participat- ed in spirited compe- tition with the local teams in two age groups - Tweens and Junior Belles. Fifteen games were played and as this was not an official tourna- ment, no winners were declared. The '"'sports- gal" awards went to the Longlac Junior Belles and the Terrace Bay Tweens. The executive would like to thank everyone who helped to make our tournament a_ suc- cess. This includes coaches, time and score keepers, those who pro- vided lunch and took in billets and everyone who made donations. The girls will be travelling to Longlac and Nipigon in the near future. Jamboree .. . continued from page 1 bowling, court games, a Video Game Challenge, . and on Saturday evening the Township of Terrace will be treating the lads to a spaghetti supper which will be held at the Moose Hall. Sunday, hockey will be played from 8 a.m. to 12 noon, followed by a hot dog lunch and then fare- wells. Watch next week's "NEWS" for more in- formation on this up- coming "Jamboree."' upset Manitouwadge before losing by a 3-2 score. Pee Wees at Terrace Feb. 11-12th Results next week. Upcoming North Shore Action Bantams at Mani- touwadge Feb. 18th and 19th and at Schreiber Feb. 25th and 26th. Midgets will be at Marathon Feb. 25th and 26th. Invitational Tourna- ments Atoms' were in Schreiber this past weekend and will be in Longlac this coming weekend. Bantams have been invited to Geraldton. Midgets were slated to be in Hornepayne last weekend but the tour- nament had to be can- celled. Hornepayne is hoping to reschedule it at a later date. Other News The TBMHA honour- ed last year's Pee Wee North Shore champions by presenting the team with crests to signify their achievement. The TBMHA would like to thank those peo- ple who took the time to express their views re- garding the value of the 2 and 3 minute playing tule. Reports from some Atom and Pee Wee games played since the rule was dropped, indi- cated an apparent need for such a concept. In one reported game, a player stayed on the bench until approxi- mately 35 seconds 'were left in the game. At that time he made his first appearance on the ice. Our last item this week is a reply to Russ Phillips from Doug Roberts, Mary Cashmore, and the rest of the TBMHA execu- tive.. Your complaint (justified) by phone was acted upon the same evening that it was re- ceived. Last week's pa- per informed the Mite parents that additional hockey practices have been allocated to the Mites. Had you checked back as was requested, you would have found that your letter to the ""NEWS"' was probably not necessary. Also, neither Mr. Roberts nor Mrs. Cashmore feel that "'the programme lacks" or said that they thought you were entitl- ed to a refund of your registration fee. They agreed you were entit- led to request it if you felt that strongly about it. If anyone has any question regarding the operation of minor hockey in Terrace Bay, don't hesitate to contact the executive with your concern. M.
