They get trap- ped in games of "one- upmanship" which be- comes increasingly diffi- cult to end. In future articles we will examine some of these discour- aged ways of communi- cating, first between husband and wife, and later between parent and child. The need for this name change is the re- sult of a legal agreement between the founder of the Browndale Or- ganizations and the . Board of Directors. The name "Kinark™ was chosen following months of consulta- tions with the Board of Directors, Staff and, needless to say, the children of Browndale (Ontario). "Kinark"' is pronounced with equal emphasis on each svl- lable, with Kin repre- senting kinship and Ark for safe place. So the name changes but the philosophy does not. '*Kinark" equals Commitment to high quality services for troubled children and their families in Ontario, and advocacy on their behalf. Everyone at "Kinark Child and Family Services" enters the second decade of service with renewed vigour and ever increas- ing enthusiasm for the task ahead. Hillcrest High School - First in Ontario Hillcrest High School in Thunder Bay, Ont., is making history as well as saving $35,000 in annual heating costs by converting from natural gas to waste-wood fuel. It becomes the first public high school in Ontario to combine mod- ern technology with one of the world's oldest sources of renewable fuel. In the process, its new wood-burning sys- tem is expected to an- nually displace an esti- mated 87 per cent of the gas used to heat the school in past years. Installed at a cost of $263,000, the system, over its estimated life of 15 years, is expected to generate savings of about $500,000 and pay for itself by 1990. Funding for the pro- ject comes primarily from the Ontario Minis- try of Energy ($167,000) as part of its broad-bas- ed Alternative and Re- newable Energy pro- gram. Mississauga, Ont., in- staller of the system, contributes $15,000. An integral part of a feasibility study for the project had been avail- ability of economically priced waste-wood fuel. This will be supplied, under a 10 year agree- ment, by Port Arthur Lumber and planing Mill in Thunder Bay. The waste wood in the form of fine jack pine bark from a debarker is delivered when needed and stored at the school. As demand requires, the wood is moved by a series of augers from storage to the furnace fire-box where it burns to produce some two million BTUs of heat per hour for the steam boil- er. The system, includ- ing ash removal, oper- ates automatically and requires lightup just at the beginning of the heating season. No ma- jor alterations to the school's steam-heat sys- tem have been neces- sary. Natural gas will be used only as a backup fuel during mid-winter peak periods and during early spring and fall. The wood-burning system, adapted by Moldow from European- developed technology, will be carefully moni- tored to evaluate its on- going efficiency, per- formance and emis- sions.
