Attempts are now be- ing made to inform everyone that "drinking and driving is simply not acceptable." Statistics have proven that over half of all fatal accidents are caused by drinking 'drivers and everyday, two our of every 81 motor vehicle deaths are caused by alcohol-re- lated accidents. The statistics are high - too high. Traffic acci- dents are the 4th lead- ing cause of all deaths in Canada and the #1 killer of people under the age of 30. Community Ser- vices Co-Ordinator for the Thunder Bay Dist- rict, Reg Essa said "The O.P.P. only enforce the laws. The people have the responsibility of dealing with the results. The O.P.P. are trying to instill interest in this problem of drinking and driving. By identifying the problem, then may- be they, as a commun- ity, can come. up with some solutions."' O.P.P. Officer Don Anderson demonstrates the "'ALERT'"' device which will be used to inform the law enforcement officers of drinking drivers. Officer Frank Grimaldi is shown here blowing into the 'legally acceptable' device. Drinking drivers kill [t's a fact! Drinking drivers kill hundreds of Canadians every year. It's a fact! Over 35 per cent of all fatal traffic crashes involve booze (alcohol). It's a fact! Something CAN be done about it. YOU, the general pub- lic can simply stop drinking and driving. "None for the Road!" That's the theme of the Canada Safety Council 28th Annual National Safe Driving Week. All road users are urged to drive sober during Safe Driving Week and every week beyond that. If you must party and drink liquor of any kind, get a sober person to drive. Better still, take a taxi or stay with your host until you're sober. Remember, there is no-quick remedy to sob- er a person after drink- ing alcoholic beverages. It takes time! It takes about 1 hour " to eliminate each 12 oz. bottle of normal strength beer, 1% oz. spirits or S oz. of table wine. Many people are impaired, to a degree, even with one drink. Play it safe. "None for the Road'\ and do your part to reduce the trage- dy of traffic crashes. GIVE YOUR KID A BIG SMILE WITH A LITTLE SUZUKI THIS CHRISTMAS He went on to say that the drinking and driving campaign is not just for the Christmas and New Year's holiday ahead. It will be an ongoing ef- fort. "We aren't out to tell the people or preach to the people that they shouldn't drink. All we are trying to get across is the fact that they shouldn't. drink and drive. They just don't mix, and that's what is killing people," said Of- ficer Essa. Officer Don Ander- son of the Schreiber O.P.P. stated that it is their hope that through the media, the commun- ity groups and the edu- cators, this problem can be resolved. He went on to explain about a new programme that they hope will get off the ground for this area. If enough people are con- cerned about the high stats on alcohol-relat- ed accidents, there may be a way for them to group together and come up with some solu- tions to the problem. Hopefully this type of community group can be formed in the early part of 1984, and this can get 'the ball rolling'. The O.P.P. in con- junction with the Ter- race Bay Police Depart- ment will be keeping a close watch on drinking drivers over the holiday season. Part of this pro- gramme will include various 'spot-checks' throughout the areas of Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, December 14, 1983, page 13 Too many deaths! claim O.P.P. Rossport, Schreiber and Terrace Bay. Reports will be pub- lished in the "NEWS'"' on the number of spot- checks made for that week; the number of '""ALERT'"' tests; and from the ALERT tests will be determined: the number of warnings given along with the number of 12 hour licen- ce suspensions; the number of 'fails'; the number of breathaly- zer tests given; and the number of impaired driving charges laid.
