November Report by: Deputy Fire Chief - R.MoQuin During the month of November, the Terrace Bay Fire Dept. held its regular training ses- sions. A special meeting was held with Reeve Dave Speer, attending in re- gards to the Fire Dept. Social, snow removal in front of the Fire Hall, and an awning in front of the small walk at the door, due to the ice falling off the roof. On November 14th, the Terrace Bay Fire Dept. was out going door to door handing out free Fire Prevention in- Please _re- member to read your pamphlet carefully. For those who did not re- ceive any, please don't feel left out - the Fire Dept. is awaiting more bags to package the rest of the information, so we can get to the homes that were not reached. In these pamphlets, there is a red heart sym- bol on a white back- ground. This is made of fluorescent material and shines in the dark. This heart symbol is recog- nized Canada-wide, by all other Fire Depart- ments. This symbol is to show that the heart placed on your window will support life in your bedroom or your child- ren's room. In case of a rescue, that heart sym- bol could speed up the rescue operation. Due to the popular demand of these hearts across Canada, the Fire Departments were only able to place one heart in each bag - a second order has been placed and the department will try to get more stickers for all occupied bed- rooms and hand them out when they arrive. The Fire Dept. an- swered two chimney fires; one house fire with minimum damage; two auto fires; and also as- sisted the Recreation Dept. on the failure of a compressor. radio dispatch Keep our number on hand. This means that an in- dividual must have paid into the plan through employment earning de- ductions for a _ fixed period of time in order to receive the Plan's benefits. Ski Town magazine The Ski Thunder As- sociation of Thunder Bay, announces the pub- lication of their new 56 page SkiTown Maga- zine. Barb McEwen, Gen- eral Manager of Ski Thunder explains that the purpose of this pro- motional booklet is two- fold. Firstly, it is a com- bined effort of all those involved in promoting skiing as a valuable 'tourism market. Rather than individually solicit- ing businesses in our area, it became evident that what was required was a unified effort to promote Thunder Bay as a "Ski Destination."' Secondly, although we are fortunate to have these excellent ski facili- ties virtually at our door step, our locals still do not perceive us to be a "'SkiTown," hence the name. Our major markets, Winnipeg, Minnea- polis-St. Paul and North- western Ontario, all look upon our city as a Ski- Town and by the en- couragement of the local population to invite their friends to "bring their skis' on their next win- ter visit or if we can encourage branch offices of local busi- "nesses_ to invite their SHUFFLE & SHAKE MUSIC at your ser- vice for all occas- ions. The current economic slump will not go away by itself. It is efforts like these that encourage and help us to stimulate and receive our fair share of the potential tourist dollars. Excellent packages are available and 100,000 copies of the SkiTown Magazine are being widely distributed free of charge. Everything you could possibly want to know about skiing locally, from downhill to jump- ing to cross country are detailed for your con- venience. Races, special events and apres ski are all set out for you in an easy to read format. A "Snow Caps" con- test in conjunction with Ski Thunder and Bay Beverages is another major promotional event taking place this year. There are up to the value of $3 million dol- lars in prizes to be won, with First Prize being a trip for two compli- ments of Air Canada, anywhere in their sys- tem. Point-of-purchase material will be avail- able at all Northwestern Ontario outlets, offer- ing Coke, Sprite, Tab and Diet Coke. See the SkiTown Magazine for further details. There is also a Japan Camera Photo Contest encouraging the skier or non-skier alike to cap- ture the spirit of Ski- Town and win except- ional prizes. First Prize is a Ricoh Camera Out- fit and the prize photo-' graph could be next year's cover. Our advertisers have been - yery supportive and we encourage the tourists to in turn sup- port these establish- ments. This is a non- profit venture done sole- ly for promotional pur- poses.
