The Schreiber Parks and Remembrance Day Approaches The Royal Canadian Legion's poppy fund has a three-fold purpose: it provides employment for disabled veterans and their widows, money for veterans' wel- fare, and a simple but meaningful way to re- member approximately 114,000 Canadians who died in the First -and Second World Wars and the Korean conflict. Poppies and wreaths are made at Vetcraft Shops in Toronto and Montreal. About 30 workers are employed at the two plants and an- other 75 work from their homes. They produce more than 12 million poppies and thousands of wreaths and cross- es annually. Where does the mon- ey raised through their distribution go? It could provide bursaries for children of ex-service personnel, or help op- erate a Legion Service Bureau that assists vet- erans in making pen- sion claims. It could also be used to operate day- care centres for seniors, or it might help needy ex-servicemen in other Commonwealth or allied "Functions of the Poppy" countries. There are as many uses as there are veterans. * Most importatly, wearing a scarlet pop- py is a way to remember the thousands of young Canadians who died years ago on the sea, in the air and on foreign battlefields from France and Africa to Korea.
