Page 6, Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, October 26, 1983 29 years for UNICEF 1983 marks the 29th year that Canadian chil- dren will Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, the United Nations Children's Fund. Last year, the UNICEF Halloween campaign raised over one million and a half dollars to benefit and protect children in 21 countries. When you give to UNICEF, the official U.N. "children's" agen- cy, the world's poorest children receive the bas- ic necessities of life: food, clean water, med- icine and education. In many countries around the world, the very question of survival is one that children face every day. The first five years of a child's life are the most important ones. It is during this time that ninety percent of a child's brain and fifty percent of a child's body are formed. If a child's basic needs are not met, he could die or never develop fully. In fact, last year 40,000 young children died, not as a result of war or natural disaster, but be- cause of the combina- tion of malnutrition and preventable infection. For every child that died, six more live on, hungry and sick. This is a "silent emer- gency'. It does not 1983/84 Season make headlines, but the lack of food and clean drinking water, inade- quate medical care and the unavailability of so- cial. services together constitute the greatest threat to the survival of over one billion child- ren. Hallowe'en Puffs : of Wicked Delight I I Gradually add the va- nilla pudding, then add Waterford Cream; mix well. ' Refrigerate at one hour. least Puffs '4 cup shortening or butter 1 cup flour 4 eggs 1/8 tsp. salt Add shortening to 1 cup of boiling water and the salt. ; Stir over medium heat until it boils. Lower heat and add 1 cup of flour. Stir until it leaves the sides of the pan. Re- move from heat. Add eggs one at a time, stirring well after each egg. Teaspoon onto un- greased cookie sheet. Bake at 400 for 20 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 deg. Bake for 20 minutes. _ Cool puffs. Cut in half and fill. Sprinkle with powdered sugar before serving. Make 48 puffs on two cookie sheets.
