Page 8, Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, September 28, 1983 Marathon to receive heliport Wilson Memorial General Hospital in Marathon has been giv- en approval to build a 24-hour heliport to make ' air ambgjance service availablé around the clock. Construction con- tracts have been award- ed to Towland Hewitson Construction Ltd. and Peterson Electric Co. Ltd., both of Thunder Bay. The total project costs of $41,272.00 will be shared by the Minist- ries of Health and Northern Affairs. The Ministry of Transporta- tion and Communica- tions will provide tech- nical guidance. This pro- ject has been endorsed by the Thunder Bay District Health Council. Health Minister Keith Norton said that he was pleased that Marathon is to have access to air ambulance service, both day and night in order to transfer critically ill or injured patients to me- dical centres and he felt that this would enhance the health care in the community of Mara- thon. The Ministry's air ambulance "Bandage 3" which is stationed at Thunder Bay, has been available only during daylight hours on a spe- cial waiver from Trans- port Canada to operate without a licensed heli- port. The nearest licen- sed airport to Marathon is located at Terrace Bay, 83 kilometers away. At present there are 25 licensed heli- ports in Ontario with a further 10- in various stages of construction. As many as 10 more are expected to be built this year as part of a major expansion plan, making air ambulance service available 24 hours a day in most areas of the province.
