The veteran New Democrat MPP, who has represented the Riding for fifteen years, has made clear his in- tention to retire when the next provincial elec- tion is called. The New Democrats have consistently won Lake Nipigon by some of the largest margins in any riding in the pro- vince, but Stokes re- tirement has led both the Liberals and the Progressive Conserva- tives to believe they have a real chance of winning the next time around. : All three _ par- ties have been moving high profile politioal fig- ures into the Riding. Last winter New Demo- - crat Leader Bob Rae flew in to speak at a dinner the day after he won. his seat in the Legislature in the York- South by-election. Provincial Treasurer Larry Grossman at- tended the P.C.'s Mini- Convention in Schrei- ber last July. While On- tario Liberal Leader David Peterson made ah extensive tour of the Riding in August, speaking in Nipigon Schreiber and Mara- thon. The New Democrats have been the first off the mark to call a Nomi- nation for a candidate to succeed Stokes. They will be meeting on Octo- ber 2 in Nipigon. Among the names being men- tioned as contenders for the Nomination are for- mer Manitouwadge Reeve Gilles Pouliot and Terrace Bay Reeve Dave Speer. ; Bob Rae will be the Key-note speaker at the Nomination along with Deputy Leader Jim Foulds, the MPP for Thunder Bay's Port Ar- thur riding. Riding President John Power said that he was making no bets on whé would be the Party's candidate after the Octo- ber 2 Nomination, and he would not say who he willbe personally sup- porting. "The names 'being mentioned are very competent, experi- enced people who have years of successful pub- lic service behind them. That means we will be- able to offer a strong, able candidate that the voters of Lake Nipigon can put their support behind with confiden- EDITOR's NOTE: Upon double-checking this information with Dave Speer, he stated that no, he was not considering any such move. 19th Hole... continued from page 8 Ontario, all the events held at Aguasabon this, year were highly suc- cessful.
