Page 2, Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, June 1, 1983 Homes for the aged The May meeting of the Board of Manage- ment of the District of Thunder Bay Homes for the Aged was held at Birchwood Terrace in Terrace Bay on Friday, May 13th with five Board members in at- tendance. The Board decided to delay the election of of- ficials as two appointees have yet to be made. They felt this would be finalized by the June meeting. Accounts for the months of March and April were approved to- talling $387,820.30. Six resident applications were approved for ad- mission, four for Pine- wood Court and two for Birchwood Terrace. The tender of Bay Northern Construction for the renovations at Birch- wood Terrace _ for $29,000.00 was approv- ed. The Board accepted the proposal of Maple- doram Brokers Limited for the four insurance policies covering Pine- wood Court and Birch- wood Terrace. The Board approved the amended salary schedule at Pinewood Court and Birchwood Terrace for office em- ployees and craft teach- ers in order to comply with provincial legisla- tion. The Board agreed to extend the present agreement with 'C.U.P.E. with the five per cent increase for employees on June 1, 1983. Employees receiv- ing less than $15,000 will receive a $750 in- crease. The Board approved the tender of Bruno's Contracting to pave a small area of Pinewood Court for wheelchair ac- cess to the picnic shel- ter at a cost of $350. The Administrator, M.J. Vibert, was auth- orized to obtain pro- posals and tenders on the following work: Pinewood Court 1. Picnic shelter 2. Change in wall be- tween dining rooms 3. Drapes for, main lounge 4. Pre-planning for west wing, priot to dining room addtion Birchwood Terrace 1. Proposal for drapes in main lounge The Board authorized the Administrator, the Accounts Supervisor, and a Board-member to attend the Compre- hensive Audit Workshop in Sault Ste. Marie on May 26, 1983 at a cost of $10.00 per participant. The Board approved delegates to attend the Annual Regional Con- ference in Fort Frances on June 8, 9, 10. The Board spent con- siderable time with the next item on the agenda, replacement of the Ad- ministrator. They re- viewed a number of options which they had. The final decision was left for the June meet- ing. The Board's main concern was that 'the new appointee would be given sufficient guid- ance by the present administrator, until the appointee gains some confidence in handling the operation. Just over 200. people took advantage of per- fect weather Saturday to enter a Walk A Thon sponsored by the Grade eight class of St. Martin's school in Ter- race Bay. The twenty mile route between St. Martin's and Holy Angels School in Schreiber was scatter- ed with adults and child- ren of all sizes between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. when the last walker finally checked in. 204 walkers were registered at the start. 182 made it at least as far as Schrei- ber. 105 started out on the return trip and 89 completed the entire 20 mile trek. The first walker to complete the distance was Gerard Pineault, grade 8, who finished in just under 5 hours. Sec- ond was Edward Angus and third was Michael Fournier, grade 6. The walking-est fa- mily were the Peter Carons and the Butch Bouchards. The four Carons children (Mona, Billy, Diane and Paul) all completed the 20 miles. The four Bouch- ard entires (Nancy, Carol, John and Ray- mond) also walked the full route. The youngest partici- pants were' Greg Adamo, grade 2, Billy Caron and Raymond Bouchard, grade 3. Ron- nie Dakin, grade 2, and Teddy Luke, grade 3, each covered 18 miles. Kindergarten student Gordie Lang covered 10 miles. Minor Hockey Jim Armstrong, presi- dent of the Minor Hock- ey League, was MC at the banquet held in the Legion and attended by 86. Others at the head table were Bill Stefurak, secretary treasurer, and Joe Caccamo, vice presi- dent. The Coaches were Cos Filane, Ted Wilson, Mike Smilsky, Pat Con- ley and Steve Cheryl, with referee Borden Ross and rink manager John St. Jean.
