Pee Ae wee ute Hig thal Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, March'30, 1983; page 9 Pluton inspecting a Schreiber Kindergarten Class One of the most inter- esting and active rooms in the Schreiber Public School lies just inside the front doors - the kindergarten room. The Kindergarten teacher is Joyce Reid who teaches both the Junior Kindergarten class in the morning and the Senior Kindergarten class in the afternoon. Joyce is helped with the program by High School students Shannon Riley, Lisa Ellacott and Sheryl Holmes as part of their cooperative education program. In recent years Sandy Quinton has also taught the Junior Kindergarten class. We asked Joyce what children in the public school's kindergarten class do? "In one sen- tence we learn through play. That's our motto'. "'Most of the concepts and skills the children develop are learned through game and inter- action with each other. For instance we have a housekeeping area. This is where speech capa- bility is fostered, as well as language develop- ment and interaction with their peers."' "*The school has had a Kindergarten program for years, but about six years ago a Junior Kindergarten program was added to the Kindergarten program. The Junior Kinder- garten has _ fifteen Food Keeper Pack asmall can of frozen juice in a sack lunch. It will keep the other foods chilled and will be ready to drink at mealtime. Watch Care Watches not worn frequently should be stored in plastic bags. If not in constant use, they should be wound once a week. Watch- es more than 10 years old should be cleaned oncea year. Pie Topping Put a layer of marshmallows in the bottom of a pumpkin pie, then add the filling. You will have a nice topping as the marshmal- lows will come to the top. 1883 vats 3) students and the Senior Kindergarten has 10 students. The program has been very successful and we have seen a steady increase in the enrolment." "Our program is divided in half. In the first half we use several learning centres we have set up. The child- ren have pretty well free choice going from one to the other. We have learning centres for arts and crafts, big muscle activity, blocks and games for dexterity and small muscle activity, our home centre, a listening centre, plus many other activities that are brought in from time to time."' "The other half of our morning is centred on our circle activities. The children go to the gym, 'they have their music, their drawing and their talking time."' "Kindergarten is a good preparation for school and is also a valuable learning ex- perience in its own right. It is especially valuable for children who have not had an extensive opportunity for language develop- ment and for interaction 7 with their peer/age group. All of the learn to get along, to cooperate and enjoy themselves in large groups made up of other children their own ages and with adults."' "Parents are also welcome to come in, and when they do they are put to work. There is always work for them to do. I like to see parent involvement. It is valuable for us, it helps the children, and it gives the parents a good idea of what is going on in the classroom."' "Registration for the Kindergarten program was held in the last week of February. Eight child- ren were registered then and we have had three more since. We are expecting seventeen students in the Senior Kindergarten Class and eight in the Junior Kindergarten class next year, but there is always room for more." But a pluton is very much a part of the earth, particularly Canada's share of the earth's crust. Formed more than two billion years ago, deep beneath the earth's surface, plutons are huge, underground mountain-like rock for- mations that are a com- mon feature of the Cana- dian Shield. Many have been exposed by ero- sion, lending the Shield its rugged, solid and dis- tinctive character. Scientists have taken a special interest in plu- tons recently because it has been suggested they would be ideal forma- tions in which to dispose of nuclear wastes. They are now probing deep inside the massive rock bodies, to depths of 1000 metres and more, to study their structure and environment. Few plu- tons have been explored in detail since they bear no valuable mineral ores - what little is known about them has been learned by studying out- croppings and by drill- ing into the rock. Plutons have several "typical" shapes and the largest of them, covering more than '100 square kilometres, an area about half the size of Winnipeg, are called batholiths. One batho- lith in particular, near Lac du Bonnet in eastern Manitoba, has attract- ed scientists' attention. Since the batholith is well exposed at the sur- face and located near the laboratories of the Whiteshell Nuclear Re- search Establishment at Pinawa, it is an ideal location for an under- ground research labo-. ratory. Scientists con- tinue to explore other plutons from the surface continued on page 11 Tewne Cinema 825-3771 Terrace Bay Tue. 29 Wed. 30 Thu. 3] JACKIE GLEASON - MAC DAVIS - TERI GARR ra | sat. 2 sun.d Mon. 4 The Return of the Great Adventure. ef thep IST RK HARRISON FORD KAREN ALLEN PAUL FREEMAN once» STEVEN SPIELBERG sun GEORGE LUCAS «« PHILIP KAUFMAN : we » JOHN WILLIAMS 3 at oSitenect a a wwe. 5 wed. 6 thu. 7 ri. 8 sat.9 Tootsie THIS ISA HELL OF AWAY TO MAKE A LIVING Inthe next 72 hours, this desperate,_unemp _actor will secretly audition for the female lead of a soap opera.
