"'There should be a light on the north east cor- ner, but we may have STUDENTS 'The 1983 Summer Job Experience The Ontario Government wants you to have a job this summer. Secretariat for Social Development @ Ontario - Margaret Birch. Provincial Secretary William Davis, Premier some problems with the Building Act in using a new standard. The light should go onto the build- ing itself and be part and parcel of the Rec- reation Centre." Com- missioner Kennedy said, "Let me get back to Ontario Hydro and we will have another look at ats In another question on the Minutes, Councillor Kennedy asked, "We approved in principle support for the figure skating club. Have we heard anything back from them?" Councillor Houston replied, "They haven't yet given us a price tag." Councillor George Ramsay added, "There is a possibility that this Council will make up some shortfall if they can't raise it all. However, the taxpayer is pretty hard pressed. If it is a case of not going at all we should of course support it." Under Correspond- ence, a local group call- ed Project Mayday wrote to the Council to inform them that the group will be collecting information locally on the need for alternate housing for battered wo- men on the North Shore. Heather Vandergraf is the Project's local repre- sentative and she will be contacting the municipal office staff. The provincial Minis- try of Municipal Affairs and Housing informed the Council that the Terrace Bay Official Plan will not receive immediate approval by the Minister because of objections being rasised by the Ministry of Natu- ral Resources. Question- ed about the delay Reeve Speer said, "I expected as much, that they would not approve it. There are certain areas that they brought up in the formulation of the Plan. We considered the objections but felt that the Plan as it stood was what we wanted so we stuck to our guns, Under the Act the Min- ister is free to arbitrarily change our Plan if he wants to. The issues are small points but it is delaying the process, however, we expected this."' The Ministry of Transportation and Communications wrote to advise the Town that its Zone painting crew (highway lines) would be working in the area this summer and wanted to know if the Town wanted to use the crew on its own streets. On a motion moved by Joe Kennedy, seconded by George Ramsay, the Council requested the MTC to do Zone paint- ing work (white lines), as required and agreed to have the Township pay the costs. Councillor Houston said that he was dissa- tisfied with the way the road lines were laid out on Selkirk and Radisson. "If you follow that yel- low line you're going to drive right into the curb where the street splits." He requested that the lines be set properly when the painting is done. A Terrace Heights resident wrote to ex- press concern about the safety of children on bicycles in the area and to suggest that a bicycle safety rodeo be held and that sidewalks be built in parts of Terrace Heights. "Sidewalks would sure be nice but I'm probably going to be told that they are too expensive, but I'm going to try anyway."' Reeve Speer said, "I really appreciate re- ceiving this kind of let- ter, it's encouraging. The Chief of Police does have a bicycle school yearly and I will discuss this with him." Council- lor George Ramsay said, "I think she is quite right when she says we can't afford to put in sidewalks. I don't even know if in the on long term we would be consi- dering them in_ that area."' Councillor Ken- nedy took up the point and said, "The area she is talking about is where the road junctions in front of Russ Phillip's place. There is a hump in the road and you can't see what is coming. It's a blind spot and people -- go through there like a bat out of hell. We should do something about it." Councillor Ramsay finished off the debate saying, "I think we should send a letter saying we will be having a bicycle safety school, and as far as sidewalks, we will have to say that we can't afford them."' Under Committee Re- ports, Councillor Ken- nedy suggested the set- ting of a date for the annual Spring Clean-Up Week. "It's getting around to that time of the year and I think in the very near future we are going to have to set a week: for the spring clean-up." Reeve Speer reported that the Planning Board is working with MP Keith Penner and MPP Jack Stokes on the set- ting up of an Economic Development Seminar for April 29. The Semi- nar will involve Mara- thon and Schreiber and be held in Terrace Bay. Councillor George Ram- say was appointed to the organizing Committee to represent Terrace Bay.
