Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, March 16, 1983, page 3 Former Schreiber priest dies Rev. Owen Gore Bar- row, the Anglican priest in Schreiber during the 1950's, died last week in Toronto. Barrow died Sunday in Mississaugua Hospital after suffering a stroke at his Park St. home in Mississauga. He had just turned 73. It was his third stroke since 1977, a year after his retirement. He was a nephew of the late Rt. Rev. Derwyn Trevor Owen, who serv- ed as Anglican Primate of All Canada from 1934 until his death in 1947. Barrow was born in Toronto on March 7, 1910 and after ordina- tion as an Anglican priest, he accepted a charge at Grand Val- ley near Orangeville. Later, he became assistant curate at Holy Trinity Church, now sur- rounded by the Eaton Centre. It was while ser- ving here that he met and became engaged to Margaret Thomas, who had emigrated from Wales at the age of 12 with her family. Barrow sailed for England in 1936 and a year later his fiance followed and they were married. The couple and their daughter sailed for Ca- nada on a hospital ship in 1943 during the height of U-Boat war- fare in the North Atlan- tic. His next three parish- es were at Teulon, Manitoba and Schreib- er, and Marathon, On- tario. It was during his ser- vice at Marathon that he had the experience of running the only Pro- testant church in the community. Barrow held. ser- vices in Holy Trinity Church for Anglicans, Presbyterians, Luther- ans, Baptists and mem- bers of the United and Greek Orthodox Church- es and the Salvation Army. ""God is neither an Anglican, Baptist, Pres- byterian, Lutheran nor United Church," he once told an interviewer. Barrow left Marathon in 1955 and until 1967 was rector of Christ Church Campbellford. In 1964 he was made rural dean of Peter- borough. In 1967 he was posted to the Church of the Nativity in Toronto. On retirement in 1976 he was assistant to the rector.of Grace Church, Markham.
