Jackfish meet stiff opposition in Mair: Residents of Jack- fish and Marathon squared off in a some- times heated debate on Monday of last week. The Lake Superior Board of Education has een under intensive "lobbying from Jackfish residents to extend the Board's boundaries to take in the rural and wilderness areas not now in the Board's juris- diction lying between the four major commun- ities of Marathon, Mani- touwadge, Schreiber and Terrace Bay. The former school board passed a motion _ sponsored by Terrace: Terrace Ba Schreiber. Bay Trustee Joan Nu- gent which annexed the areas subject to final approval from the Min- istry of Education. Fol- lowing the November elections several Board members raised quest- ions about the adequacy of the resolution and whether or not enough thought and planning had gone into the Mot- ion before it was pass- ed. Terrace Bay Trustee Jim 'Figliomeni led a move that resulted in the tabling of the annex- ation until the details could be worked out. Supportees of the. tabl- * ing motion said after the meeting that they thought the original Mo- tion was "premature and carelessly word- ed.- The Ministry of Edu- cation subsequently ad- vised the Board that 'it would not be able to pro- . ceed with the previous Board's annexation mo- tion whether it had been tabled or not because the motion mentioned only vague geographic areas, failed to define specific boundaries and lacked the necessary supporting documenta- tion on the students resi- dent in the areas. The Board of Edu- cation decided to set up a Committee to study the entire matter. The Committee consisted of four Trustees, two prop- erty owners paying tax- es and two property owners not paying edu- cation taxes. The Com- mittee members were to talk to the people in their communities and determine their opin- ions, hold a public meet- ing in Marathon on Feb- ruary 14 to listen to any- thing that anyone want- ed to say about the question, and then make a Recommendation to the Board at its Febru- ary 21 meeting on whe- y Vol. 28, No. 8 Paula Bouchard, Captain of the Novice Team, presents Harold Kodila with the Trophy the Team won at the Northern » Wednesday, February 23, 1983 Ontario Section Championships. The Super Superiors won the' Northern Ontario Championships in North Bay Saturday, February 12. The team defeated five otiger en- tries at the North Bay event and now moves on national championships in London, Ontario on April 3. The Team is made up of figure skaters from Terrace Bay, Marathon, Manitouwadge and Hornepayne coached by Paul Wirtz. Team members are Paula Bouchard, Karen Brassard, Tracey Clark, Cathy Hansen, Mary Jo Files, Mark Saranpaa, Kris Wirtz, Jennifer Samec, Sarah Fry, Jodi LeBlanc, Charlen Le- Sarge, Shelley LeSarge, Nancy Hardy, Colleen Gulley and Debcrah Bucknell. Local Reach For The Top team plays Schreiber and Ter- race Bay's Reach for the Top team will be playing Lakeview High School on television this week. The game will be broad- cast on CKPR TV on February 26. Another game against Port Ar- thur Collegiate Insti- tute will-be broadcast on March 12. Mike Reid chaired the meeting and sketched the background for the audience. Reid then said, "We are here to listen to what you have to say. The Board has not made up its mind about this, but when we do it will be based largely on what you have to say here tonight." The Board Committee consists of Chairman Mike Reid, Terrace Bay Trustee Gerry Armour, Schreiber Trustee Tim Delaney, Marathon Trustee Bob Cheetam, Jackfish resident Mrs. Charlotte Kneipp, Gerry Waghorn from Mara- thon, Rob Gallen from Manitouwadge, and Bill' Keating of Schreiber. Terrace Bay Trustee Gerry Armour acted as spokesman for the Jack- fish residents and used several maps to show the areas he felt it would be appropriate to in- "clude in the enlarged Board. The - Com- mittee itself appeared strongly split with the Jackfish and Mara- thon members holding to their original posi- tions throughout the evening. After the Meeting several members of the Committee suggested that there would pro- bably be both majority and minority Committee Reports going to the Board at its meeting on Monday, February 21 in Marathon. : The Grade 5 class at the Terrace Bay Public School had its own Winter Carnival Parade last week. The ised was Jamie Speer and the Queen was Tanya Ditchfield. 3 4 North Stars beat On Thursday evening February 17, the Schrei- ber North Stars secured i a second place standing in the Thunder Bay Junior League with an impressive 4 to 3 victory over 'the Thunder Bay Hornets. Scoring for the North Stars were the following players: George Hernes 1 goal, 3 assists; Mark Campbell 2 goals, 1 assist; Brian Hiller, 1 goal, 2 assists, and Jeff Fortier i goal. : The final and winning goal was scored on an empty net by team cap- © tain Mark Campbell with 1:47 remaining in the third period. The North Stars played a strong third period of hockey especially, in forechecking and pass- ing components of the game. Rookie* goal- tender Joey Speziale Thunder Bay Hornets provided excellent goal- tending stopping thirty- eight shots. - The' Schreiber North Stars play next in Thun- der Bay Tuesday, February 22 against the Trophy Kings, and at home for the last regular season game on Tues- day, March 1 against the Thunder Bay Hornets. The players would ap- preciate fan support. Schreiber Council starts budget review Schreiber Council met in the Council Chambers on Tuesday, February 8 for its regular month- ly meeting. Reeve Harold Fischer chaired the meeting with Councillors Ed Borutski, Mike Cos- grove, Larry Dunwoody and Burton Phillips pre- sent. Clerk-Treasurer Aurel Gauthier, Engin- eer Larry Davis, Recrea- tion Co-ordinator Kevin Duguay, Roads Super- intendent Ron Harris and Fire Chief Pete Doig also attended the meet- ing. The Roads Committee reported that "it is their intention to obtain esti- mates for the paving of Bayview and Winnipeg Streets, and the prepa- ration of Peary Street with gravel base. The Committee is also re- viewing the continuing problem with commer- cial property owners who are dumping snow on Township property."' On the recommenda- tion 'of the Property Committee it was de- cided that the Schreiber Figure Skating Club will be charged a rate of $10.00 per hour for the use of the Town Hall starting on April 30. The Building Com- mittee reported that fire exit doors have been in- stalled at the arena. The Council will be contact- ing a local business to -- secure '"'approved de- tailed drawings covering the installation of a sign at the business." The Fire Department presented its budget to the Council. The budget for the volunteer force is $41,715, an increase of $2,619 over last year. The new budget allows for the addition of an additional volunteer fireman to the force. Council will be review--- ing the proposed budget at a later date. The preliminary rec- reation budget was pre- sented to the Council. A special gudget «meeting will be called to review the proposal. The Council consider- ed a claim by a vehicle owner that his vehicle was damaged while be- ing towed away as an obstruction to snow re- moval operations.
